    Brendon faced them, his tone sharp. “How did this happen? Why would she fall like that?”


    “It… It was because of me,” Ynda whispered, her eyes reddening with tears. “I asked Katie to take me to her. I only wanted her to ept me. I never imagined something like this would happen.”


    “So, it was an ident?” Brendon asked, his voice trembling.


    He refused to believe Ynda would harm his grandmother. But if not her, then who?


    Ynda lowered her head, her shoulders shaking quietly as tears fell.


    Brendon’s gaze shifted abruptly to Robin. “Did you do it?” he shouted, grabbing Robin by the shirt.


    Robin didn’t back down. He swung his fist, hitting Brendon squarely in the jaw.


    “Ask them,” he snarled. “When I walked in, Mrs. Dawson was already falling. Those two were the only ones upstairs.”


    If Robin hadn’t held back, Brendon would have been on the floor.


    He was using people without thinking. Brendon had lost all reason.


    “Brendon!” Ynda cried, running forward to steady him.


    He pulled his arm away from her grasp and red. “Was it you? Did you push her?”


    Ynda’s tears flowed freely. She bit her lip, her eyes filled with pain.


    That look made Brendon’s stomach tighten. Had he med the wrong person?


    His attention moved to Katie.


    Katie’s hands were trembling. Her eyes widened, terror shing across her face.


    The realization hit him like a physical blow. Katie?


    Brendon stared as though he no longer recognized her.


    “You…” His voice was raw. “Did you push Grandma?”


    “Brendon, I didn’t want to! I never meant to hurt her. I only…” Katie’s voice shook, but before she could finish, the sharp crack of a p echoed through the hallway.

    Brendon had struck her across the face. “How could you?” he shouted. “She’s your grandmother!”


    “I didn’t… I wasn’t trying to… I never wanted this to happen,” Katie sobbed.


    She had wanted to exin—she had walked in on Ynda and Bethel arguing. She only meant to stop them, but in the struggle, she identally caused Bethel to lose her bnce.


    Then she remembered how harshly Brendon had treated Ynda earlier. Seeing how devastated Ynda already was, Katie swallowed the truth.


    She had agreed to help Ynda because she couldn’t stand Brendon’s mistreatment. She wanted Bethel to ept Ynda into the family.


    With Bethel’s support, Ynda would finally feel wee. She would finally believe the Dawsons wanted to protect her.
