Chapter 1762: 1763: Rumus Defies Orders

Capítulo 1762: Chapter 1763: Rumus Defies Orders

Sure enough, in the evening, Rumus received a call from the Commander-in-Chief.

“Rumus, I heard you’re nning to act against the Menghu Mercenary Corps. What’s going on?” the Commander-in-Chief questioned.

In the eyes of the Commander-in-Chief, Rumus was still themander of the small base, his direct subordinate.

“That’s correct, I’ve investigated the Menghu Mercenary Corps and found links to the rebels.” Rumus responded bluntly.

“No, call amand meeting immediately and remove that from the agenda,” the Commander-in-Chief ordered.

Rumus felt disgruntled; he was now the Deputy Commander of the Northern Region, ranked just below the Commander-in-Chief.

Higher rank suppresses lower rank; Rumus was expected to adhere to the Commander-in-Chief’s orders.

But since the Commander-in-Chief was currently attending training, the work here was entirely Rumus’s responsibility.

“Why are you stopping me from taking action against them?” Rumus asked, puzzled.

If the Commander-in-Chief was an undercover agent for the rebels, he wouldn’t believe it even if killed. Since the Commander-in-Chief was so resolute in stopping Rumus, there must be a reason.

“That’s not your concern; just remember that the Menghu Mercenary Corps is untouchable,” the Commander-in-Chief said with seriousness.

“Sorry, I can’t do that,” Rumus refused.

“What?” The Commander-in-Chief widened his eyes, taken aback that Rumus defied his orders without any mental preparation.

“Rumus, what did you just say?” the Commander-in-Chief asked again.

“I’m overseeing things here now, and I must ensure national security. My apologies, Commander-in-Chief,” Rumus said firmly.

The Commander-in-Chief was dumbfounded, suddenly recalling that Rumus was now a Deputy Commander and no longer just themander of a small base.

“Do you know what you’re saying?” The Commander-in-Chief shouted, somewhat agitated.

“I hope you know what you’re saying, Commander-in-Chief,” Rumus said, not backing down, “Commander-in-Chief, you should know who’s asking you to protect the Menghu Mercenary Corps.”

“Bastard, who are you, and what right do you have to question me?” The Commander-in-Chief roared.

After all, Rumus was his subordinate, and he believed those below must unconditionally obey hismands.

Now the Commander-in-Chief’s authority was challenged, and he felt the urge to kill Rumus.

“You’re losing your cool, Commander-in-Chief. Let’s talk when you’ve calmed down,” Rumus said before hanging up the phone.

Since the Commander-in-Chief was undergoing central training, even if he was angry, he couldn’t do anything.

Rumus had grasped this point and took action ordingly.

He knew the Commander-in-Chief would call him; he just didn’t expect it to be so quick.

“Looks like someone from above is involved,” Rumus sighed inwardly while sitting there.

He believed the Commander-in-Chief was being exploited, and only one person could have such loyalty—they were his superior, Deputy Commander Rff of the Little Bas Military.

Thinking this, Rumus couldn’t help but shudder; he was merely the Deputy Commander of the Northern Military Region, far beneath the other.

And the Commander of the Little Bas Military was the number one there.

Rumus didn’t want to believe it, but the facts wereid out. He had no choice.

He was sure the Commander-in-Chief was brooding. If he reported to his superior, he risked being dismissed.

And things went as Rumus suspected.

The Commander-in-Chief almost smashed the phone in anger after the call drop. Though undergoing central training, it didn’t mean he couldn’t handle Rumus.

He could make one call to his former superior and ruin Rumus instantly.

And he did, dialing the former superior’s number. Meanwhile, Rumus’s words lingered in his mind.

“Commander Ai, what’s your business with the leader?” came Rff’s secretary’s voice.

“I wanted to say a few words to the leader,” the Commander-in-Chief said, suppressing his inner fury.

“The leader is resting, perhaps you could…” The secretary spoke tactfully.

The Commander-in-Chief understood the situation and quickly said, “Let the leader rest, then; I’ll call another day.”

“Alright, goodbye,” the secretary responded promptly.

The personal secretary of the leader often embodies the leader, inadvertently cing themselves above the Commander-in-Chief.

The Commander-in-Chief didn’t get angry; after hanging up, he pondered Rumus’s words.

He had be much more rational and knew Rumus well.

This man loathed rebels and terrorists, dedicating his life tobatting evil forces.

Moreover, Rumus was a precise soldier who typically followed orders but was inexplicably stubborn on this issue.

“Could the Menghu Mercenary Corps indeed be problematic, and I made a mistake?” he muttered to himself.

However, protecting the mercenary corps wasn’t his will; it was mandated by the former superior. If they were truly problematic, it implicated his superior…

Realizing this, his body was drenched in sweat.

“Impossible, how could my superior be linked with rebels? That’s ridiculous,” he shook his head.

Just then, his phone suddenly rang, disying the former superior’s number.

Seeing the caller ID, he hesitated to answer but ultimately did.

“I heard you were looking for me?” Rff said slowly from the other end.

His mind raced before he chuckled, saying, “It’s nothing important. I’ve missed the old leader; haven’t seen you for a while. How’s your health, leader?”

Rff chuckled in response, “Good, thank you for your concern. I hear you’re training at headquarters; make sure to study well in this digital age…”

Rff spoke a lot over the phone, showing he valued the Commander-in-Chief.

“I understand, leader. Don’t worry, I won’t let you down,” he assured.

“Yes, do well,” Rff encouraged before hanging up, once satisfied the Commander-in-Chief was fine.

After the call ended, the Commander-in-Chief sat there, confused about why he lied, though subconsciously he began guarding against Rff.

Nheless, he shook his head, knowing such matters were beyond him and he could only go with the flow.

On the other side, Rff snorted coldly after hanging up, handing the phone to his secretary.

“Check on his recent activities and report back to me.” Rffmanded.

Reaching this rank showed his acumen, especially since he had promoted the Commander-in-Chief himself, understanding his demeanor well.

If he didn’t need something, he wouldn’t call at this time…
