Adide cleared her throat and said, “Let’s coordinate our efforts. I need to know which tasks require the Capital Guard’s cooperation so I can assign personnel ordingly.”
“Alright, Dennis, you could discuss the specifics with Ellen,” Lance said. “I’ll brief Gamma Adide on the case progress.”
“Got it,” Dennis responded.
After Dennis and Ellen left, Lance had everyone else excuse themselves, leaving the couple alone.
Lance pulled Adide in front of him, gently massaging her bruised eye socket, and asked with concern, “Does it hurt?”
“A little,” Adide said, pulling his hand away and ncing toward the door, wary of eavesdroppers.
“Don’t worry, no one will interrupt us. How did this happen?” Lance pressed, his face etched with concern.
Adide finally rxed, sitting down and rubbing her eye socket herself.
It had indeed swollen more than this morning.
“It’s all Avery’s fault! He barged in while Paisley and I were sparring, and both of us got caught in the crossfire,” sheined.
“I’ll dock his pay,” Lance said, his voice tinged with both concern and amusement.
Avery was usually level–headed, but around Paisley and Adide, his old rambunctious Shadow–Peak days resurfaced.
Adide chuckled, “Docking his pay would be worse than a punishment. Money’s trivial, but if Georgina finds out and informs his mentor, leading to additional penalties, he’ll be in real trouble.”
“We’ll just threaten him. No real docking,” Lance said, aware of their close bond.
Their friendship, forged in youth, was rare and precious.

“By the way, there’s something important,” Adide said, her expression turning serious.
“Lycan Erasmus wants me to rmend Ulrik as the captain of the Lycan King’s personal werewolf guard, with an official appointment letter.”
Lance wasn’t surprised. “He’s been wanting to use Ulrik. Previously, Ulrik had no standout achievements for promotion, but now that he’s contributed, it’s a perfect opportunity. Besides, the Lycan King’s personal guard, though technically under the Ironthorn Army, is actually beyond your control, answering only to Lycan Erasmus. This is just a transitional move.”
“Right, and soon they’ll be an independent entity,” Adide added.
“The Royal Guard originally had twelve departments, including the Lycan King’s personal werewolf guard. Lycan Erasmus’s decision to separate it is clearly to cultivate a core of loyalists. Ulrik’s the best choice–he has a past with you, and the Blood Moon Pack’s resentment toward you has reached the southern border. Using him will check your power,” Lance analyzed.
Adide’s face darkened with indignation. “Some people are so odd–me others for their own mistakes.”
“Otherwise, what do you think people mean when they talk about ruffians?” Lance remarked.
Gently massaging her eye socket, Lance’s palm gradually warmed. “But having you rmend Ulrik–word will spread and sound unsavory. If you hear gossip, just shake it off. Let those rumors fall on deaf ears.”
“I don’t mind, but I was worried you would. If you don’t care, neither do I,” Adide said, closing her injured eye as Lance continued to rub it, her other eye fixed on him.
Lance couldn’t resist leaning in for a kiss.
Adide startationally jumped back. “Don’t–what if someone sees?”
“No one will,” Lance said, amused by her stern, official demeanor.
He chuckled, “Alright, I’ll behave. Did Lycan Erasmus say anything else?”
He returned to his seat as Adide updated him on Lycan Erasmus’s orders.
Adide replied, “Lycan Erasmus said that the families of officials closely linked to Madison’s manor must be probed and interrogated. If they’re certified nobility, I’m to oversee their questioning myself.”
“Hmm, this will implicate many. Brace yourself–most interrogations will likely yield nothing,

just empty talk,” Lance said.

He suddenly realized something and asked, “Did Lycan Erasmus say to bring them to the Ministry or to question them at their homes?”
“He said to bring them in,” Adide replied.
Lance shook his head. “That’s unwise. Such public arrests will tarnish the nobility’s reputation and breed resentment.”
Adide frowned. “You’re right. I didn’t consider that. They’ll redirect their frustration toward
us.”
“It’s your first day. Nerves are normal,” Lance soothed.
“Here’s a n: personally visit those closely tied to Madison’s manor. Only bring in those you suspect.”
“Sounds good!” Adide agreed.
“There is someone you should visit–Rosa,” Lance said.
