?Chapter 3149:
Just then, a knock sounded on the door.
“Come in!”
The door opened to reveal Ernest standing in the doorway. His eyes settled on the two women; then he said to Savannah, “Mrs. Brown, it’s about time.”
The cars were waiting outside.
“Alright.” Savannah rose with Elissa. Reluctance clouded her eyes, but she tried her best to steady herself. “Elissa, it’s time to go.”
“Mom!” Elissa’s nose tingled as she stifled a sob. She opened her arms and wrapped them around her.
“My darling girl…” Savannah’s voice broke as she pulled her daughter close. Tears slipped free while she tried to soothe her with soft pats along her back. “Don’t be sad. We’ll see each other soon.”

Then, she turned toward Ernest. “Ernest, I’m entrusting my daughter to you.”
Standing tall, Ernest nodded with conviction. “Don’t worry, Mrs. Brown. I’ll take good care of Elissa.”
“Alright.”
Downstairs, Neville and William were waiting for them.
“Dad! William!”
“Elissa!”
Another round of goodbyes followed.
As the farewells went on, Savannah tugged at Ernest’s sleeve and drew him aside.
“Ernest.”
“Yes, Mrs. Brown?”
“If…” Savannah paused, weighing each word before she finally spoke. “And I’m only saying if. If one day you grow tired of Elissa… please tell me to pick her up. Don’t do anything to frighten her.”
She woulde to take her daughter home and spare her as much hurt as she could.
Her words caught Ernest off guard.
“Mrs. Brown, that day will nevere.”
But of course, he understood that no matter how many times he repeated himself, a mother’s heart could never bepletely at ease.
“We’ll keep in touch often. You’ll see for yourself whether I keep my word,” he assured her.
Savannah managed a small smile and nodded. “Alright.”
By the time they boarded the ne, Elissa had cried so much her eyes were red and puffy. Now, shey on the bed while Ernest held an ice pack gently against her swollen eyelids.
“Feeling better? Does it still hurt?”
Elissa’s eyes had been sensitive since the injury. Too much crying made them ache unbearably.
“Kinda,” she replied, her voice hoarse from all the tears.
Ernest watched her with concern. “Elissa, are you scared?”
“Huh?” Elissa blinked in confusion. “Scared of what?”
“Going to Srixby with me. Sure, it’s our home. Still, you don’t remember any of it now, and it might feel like a foreign ce to you.”
Elissa thought about it, and then shook her head. “Not really.”
“No?” Ernest looked pleased. At the same time, a hint of curiosity could be seen in his eyes. “Why not?”
At first, Elissa didn’t answer. After pondering for a moment, she shook her head again and sighed. “I don’t know.”
Surprised by her answer, Ernest let out a chuckle. “And yet you’re willing toe with me?”
