    “Really?”


    Colleen raised her hand to her face, gently rubbing her cheek. “I guess… I’ve just had too much on my tetely. There have been so many surgeries, one after another, all week long. Even the weekends are packed with emergencies. There’s barely any time to rest.”


    Was that really the reason?


    Hadley didn’t think so.

    She remembered seeing Colleen at her busiest back when they were in the, during her intern days. Colleen had practically lived at the hospital, and her schedule was even more relentless than it was now.


    But even then, she’d never seemed to lose weight. Despite the heavy workload, Colleen had always been full of energy and optimism.


    But now… how could she even put it into words?


    Hadley thought Colleen just looked worn out. Her cheeks had grown hollow from the weight loss. Without makeup, her skin seemed dull, almost lifeless. She looked exhausted and drained, as if the whole world was pressing down on her.


    Hadley suddenly thought of her “new boyfriend.”


    “Are things going well between you two?”


    Colleen hesitated for a moment, then gave a small smile and nodded. “It’s fine. Nothing really bad going on.”


    After a brief pause, Colleen continued, “My mom chose him for me. He looks good on paper, and honestly, he’s not bad.”


    “Is that so?”


    As Hadley watched her, she grew more certain that Colleen was lying. It was obvious she did not actually like this “new boyfriend” of hers.


    So then, how could Hadley help her?


    Should she try talking to Louise again?


    Hadley frowned, falling silent.


    She already knew it wouldn’t work. If she were in Louise’s ce, she probably wouldn’t ept inws like the Jenkins family either.


    There was no way to convince Louise just by talking. If she wanted to help Colleen, she’d have toe up with a real solution.


    Later that evening, since Ernest and Eric couldn’t pick up their grandmother from the hospital during the day, they came home early.


    The whole family gathered for a warm, lively dinner.


    At the table, N seemed in good spirits, which put Ernest and Eric at ease.


    After dinner, Hadley went upstairs to spend some time with N.


    When she came back down, Eric was waiting for her.


    Hadley looked a little surprised. “You didn’t go home with Joy?”


    She had just seen the two of them leave together.


    “We did go home,” Eric replied. He nodded and walked over. “Joy’s taking a bath right now. I came to pick you up.”


    Hearing this, Hadley couldn’t help but chuckle to herself.


    It was only a few steps away. Besides, she was at her own ce—did he really need toe all this way just to pick her up?


    “Let’s go,” Eric said.


    He walked over and took her hand in his.


    Hadley nced up at him and smiled. She didn’t pull her hand away.
