Connor rushed over to see Gwh, his heart pounding with worry. When he
learned she had almost had a miscarriage, he cursed Hawthorne a thousand times in his head, though he was careful not to say anything out loud for fear of upsetting her.
The minute Leonie and Connor were together, they started their usual bickering, and watching them finally lifted Gwh''s spirits.
Meanwhile, Patti Yale had been recovering in the hospital for some time. One day, she thought she saw a familiar figure was it Gwh? She hadn''t had the energy to pay attention to anything else during her stay, but now, a seed of suspicion was nted. She acted on a hunch, recalling the VIP ward she had seen the figure disappear into. She stealthily approached the room.
The voiceing from inside was unmistakably Gwh''s. Peeking through the crack in the door, she confirmed it was her before quickly retreating. She then spent a little money to discreetly ask around for information about Gwh, eventually learning she was expecting twins.
"Oh, you mean Mrs. Everhart! She''s so lucky," a young nurse confided. "Mr. Everhartes to visit almost every day, and he always brings her a bouquet of flowers. A different kind every single day! When we nurses go to change the water, our hearts ache. The flowers from the day before are still perfectly fresh, but we have to throw them out. Mrs. Everhart is very kind, though. She can''t bear to see them wasted, so she always tells us to take the previous day''s flowers home. Mr. Everhart often brings her these rare Twilight Roses. They just scream money, so beautiful and extravagant."
The young nurse, oblivious to Patti''s ugly expression and murderous re, continued to gush about the couple''s romantic story, her eyes full of hope that she might one day meet a man as wonderful as Hawthorne.
Patti casually slipped her a thousand dors in cash. The nurse''s face flushed red.
"I can''t ept this. It''s against hospital rules."
Patti gritted her teeth inwardly but put on a syrupy-sweet smile. "Rules are just rules. I''m so bored here all alone. If youe by every day to tell me some interesting stories, this is just a little something for your time. It''s a friendly exchange, not a bribe. What are you afraid of? For me, this is just pocket change for a single dinner. Let''s just say we''re friends, and this is my treat."
Patti''s casual tone swept away the young nurse''s hesitation. An intern''s monthly sry was less than three thousand dors; getting a thousand just fonchatting was an incredible deal. If you hear anything else about Mr and Mrs Everhart you have to tell me. a novelist, and m
looking for inspiration for a deeply devoted male character. It''s even better to find a real-life example. Maybe my next book will be based
on their love story. I could even write a character for you."
The nurse was young and new to the professional world, easily fooled. Hearing Patti was a novelist, her eyes filled with admiration.
"Really? Can you make my character memorable?"
The girl bought itpletely. Patti spun an even bigger lie. "Of course. I''ll even give you a perfect match—a rich, handsome man who falls madly in love with a sweet young nurse like you."
The nurse blushed beet-red. “Well, I won''t disturb you any longer, Miss Yale. I have to get back to work. If I hear anything that could help with your writing, I''lle and tell you right away."
After finishing Patti''s IV drip, the nurse collected her medical tools and left with a fawning smile.
The moment she was gone, Patti''s face contorted with rage. Hawthorne visited Gwh every single day, yet he hadn''te to see her even once since that first visit. He''d had her belongings packed and sentover, making it clear he was kicking her out for good. The five-million-dor check was still in her purse-herpensation for all the time she''d spent with him. What kind of person did he take her for? Even a beggar would get more than that. But as for her ns... five million was more than enough to get things done.
Patti had spent days gathering information on Gwh. Every piece of news the nurse brought her was enough to make her blood boil, but she forced herself to listen.
