Jacob stopped abruptly.
Lawrence came to a halt right behind him. “What is it?”
Jacobtched onto a single word. “Roommates?”
“That’s right,” said Lawrence, as if it was obvious. “Since you wouldn’t let me crash at your ce, I had to settle for cheap hostels. Shared rooms, cramped bunks, and cheap rent.”
Jacob shot him a look full of doubt. The idea of Lawrence, used tofort and luxury, squeezing into a hostel bed seemed far-fetched. Even if he wasn’t officially with the Hayes family, he had enough money to live well. The story just didn’t add up.
“If you’re going to make things up, at least try to make it believable,” Jacob said, not bothering to hide his skepticism.
“Look—I’ve even got proof.” Lawrence produced a crumpled receipt from his pocket. “Picked this up from the ownerst month. Was nning to ask for a refund once you let me stay over.”
Jacob stared at him, barely able to hide his skepticism.
“You kicked me out, so covering my expenses seems only fair,” said Lawrence as he handed over the receipt.
Jacob scanned it. No question—it was real.
“What’s the name of that hostel?” Jacob asked, eyeing him closely.
Lawrence rattled off the address right away. He wasn’t worried. He had already made arrangements with the owner to y along—and maybe even make him sound a little more pathetic if Jacob came asking questions.
“I’ll have Freya check the security footage.” Jacob ran his finger along the edge of the receipt. “We’ll find out if you actually stayed there.”
A hint of panic crept into Lawrence’s eyes. “Don’t you think that’s going too far for K?”
“Not at all,” Jacob answered, seeing straight through him.
“Why not just call the owner?” Lawrence tried to deflect—anything to keep Jacob from going to Freya, because that would blow the whole story wide open.

“If Freya can check in five minutes, why should I bother running down there?” Jacob’s reply was steady. “That’d be a waste of time.”
“I would make the effort to be anywhere in person when it’s about you.” Lawrence’s tone softened as he tried a different approach.
Right then, he almost looked like a forlorn puppy, hoping to win back some affection.
Jacob’s brow twitched. He shoved the receipt back at Lawrence. “Come on. A guy who wears new outfits three times a week is not roughing it in a hostel. You’ll have toe up with a better story next time. What exactly are you thinking half the time?”
“Some part of me just evolved,” Lawrence responded immediately.
Jacob shot him a look that could only mean, Seriously?
“It mutated into hopelessly-in-love mode,” Lawrence dered, pletely straight-faced.
