“I used the door this time, so you can’t shoo me away like before,” Lawrence said, his youthful energy now softened with a touch of calm.
“I’m staying put,” Jacob replied, his voice t andced with a hint of frost. “Get out.”
“Why are you so stubborn?” Lawrence sighed, thinking this man was impossible to win over.
“You’ve got three seconds,” Jacob warned, not wanting Jessica to catch even a hint of this. “If you’re still here, don’tin when I toss you out.”
Lawrence flopped onto the couch, feigning defeat. “Go on, rough me up if you must. Break my legs—I’ll still crawl back.”
Jacob stepped closer, his tall frame casting a heavy shadow.
Lawrence felt a flicker of nerves, but for his chance at happiness, he was ready to y sneaky.
“Three,” Jacob said, staring down.
“Two,” Lawrence chimed in, counting along.
“Two,” Jacob echoed, calm as ever, brushing off the interruption.
Lawrence stayed quiet. How was Jacob still so petty after all these years?
“One…” Jacob reached to haul him up.
Lawrence was prepared. When Jacob’s hand came close, he grabbed his wrist and tugged, pulling the man down onto the couch.

Jacob didn’t see iting. Off bnce, he stumbled andnded right on top of Lawrence.
For a split second, their eyes locked. Lawrence’s sparkled with victory. Jacob’s gaze was as cold as winter.
“Am I interrupting something?” Jessica froze in the doorway, her mind reeling at the sight. “I’ll just… shut the door and let you two carry on.” She quickly closed the door and waited outside, stunned. Since when was Jacob so bold? Couldn’t they at least lock the door?
Lawrence’s grin faded. He turned to Jacob. “Who was that?”
“None of your business,” Jacob said, standing up, his usualzy demeanor slipping back into ce.
“Just tell me if it’s important,” Lawrence pressed, bolder now, his awkwardness gone. “I’ve been after you for years. I deserve to know who’s in your orbit, right?”
“You’re out of your mind.” Jacob threw the words at him, then moved to let Jessica back in.
Lawrence trailed close behind.
