Chapter 1393

    ?Chapter 1393:

Jessica asked, “If Freya were single and tried to kiss you, would you just stand there and let it happen?”

The moment she said it, the answer rang clear in his head—absolutely not.

There wasn’t a chance in hell he’d let that happen. He’d pull away in an instant.

“You wouldn’t,” Jessica said, reading him effortlessly. Her voice was calm, assured. “Because deep down, you think of Freya as family. You might be able to pretend to be her boyfriend, but physical closeness? You can’t do it.”

Melvin said nothing. Because she was right.

However, that didn’t change the fact that she and he came from twopletely different worlds. She deserved better.

“That’s just what you think,” Melvin finally said, his voice low as he forced the lie out. “If Freya asked, I’d do whatever she needed.”

Jessica’s hands clenched instantly into fists. Was he trying to drive her up the wall?

“You sure about that?” she asked, eyes narrowing.

“I’m sure,” he said with dead-serious conviction.

“Fine. I’ll call her right now. I heard she and Ellis have been arguing a lot—she could probably use somepany,” Jessica shot back, bluffing as she unlocked her phone and dialed. “You can talk to her yourself.”

Melvin was shocked. Wasn’t this the part where she should storm off and call him a jerk? Why was she…

“Hi, Jessica!” Freya’s voice came through the line.

    “Hi, Freya,” Jessica greeted sweetly.

“Is there something I can help you with?” Freya asked.

“Melvin’s got something he wants to talk to you about, but he’s too shy to call himself, so I figured I’d help out,” Jessica lied without hesitation.

Freya, sharp as always, immediately caught on and yed along. “Melvin’s with you?”

“He is,” Jessica replied as she handed the phone over.

Melvin felt like the phone suddenly weighed a hundred pounds. Still, he raised it and spoke. “Melvin speaking.”

“What’s up?” Freya’s tone was cool and measured.

“Are you and Ellis doing okaytely?”

    “We’re doing fine.”

“That’s good to hear. Take care. I won’t keep you.”

He ended the call and turned back to Jessica, his expressionced with irritation, as if silently scolding her for dragging him into that nonsense.

Jessica ignored his look and asked bluntly, “Still standing by what you said earlier?”

“I don’t have feelings for you,” Melvin said, the words hitting harder than he meant them to. In his mind, he added a silent apology. “Everything that just happened… it was because I agreed to pretend to be your boyfriend.”<fnb1a4> Content originallyes from FindN0vel</fnb1a4>

“Can’t you just be honest for once?” Jessica asked, her frustration bubbling to the surface.
