?Chapter 1392:
Melvin, honest to a fault, didn’t catch on. “No.”
“Then let me kiss you again,” Jessica said, seizing the moment.
Melvin blinked, confused.
“This time, for a bit longer,” she added.
Before he could wrap his head around it, she leaned in and kissed him again. This time, the kiss lingered—a little deeper, a little more tender, and full of genuine warmth.
After several seconds, she pulled away. Both of them were slightly breathless, their hearts pounding like wild drums.
“Well…” Jessica began to say something but stopped when she saw his face. His cheeks and ears were bright red, and the calm in his eyes had all but vanished.
Seeing her pause, he spoke, his voice a few octaves lower. “What?”
“Why’s your face so red?” Jessica poked his cheek yfully, then looked down at his chest. “Is your heart pounding too?”
“No,” Melvin lied, for once.
Jessica didn’t buy it.
Quick as ever, she leaned in and pressed her ear against his chest, catching the rapid beat echoing like a drumroll.
Melvin instantly stepped back, stiff as a board. But even as he pulled away, he reached out instinctively to steady Jessica, who nearly lost her bnce from the sudden motion.
“What are you doing?” Jessica eyed his evasive movements with suspicion, clearly puzzled.
Melvin avoided her gaze entirely and threw out an excuse. “Social distancing.”
“Acting all prudish now, are we?” Jessica saw right through him and leaned in, closing the space between them. “Funny, you didn’t say that when I kissed you earlier.”
Melvin found himself at aplete loss for words.
“And another thing,” she added, her tone deliberate.

“What?” Melvin’s thoughts were scrambled beyond repair, his brain refusing to string together a single coherent idea.
“If I’m not mistaken, you looked like you were enjoying it back there,” Jessica said boldly, her eyes locking with his. “So that means you have feelings for me.”
“No,” Melvin denied instantly, as if the word could somehow untangle the knot in his chest.
Jessica frowned. “Why can’t you just admit it?”
His fingers twitched slightly at his sides. He replied with steadyposure, “I didn’t feel a thing.”
“If you really didn’t, you’d have pushed me away the second I kissed you. Or at the very least, looked disgusted,” Jessica reasoned, already certain of what she felt. She pressed again, “Didn’t you say Freya and I are the only two who are special to you?”
Melvin’s eyes instinctively turned toward her.
