    “This world isn’t too big or too small,” Gerard went on, his voice low and somber. “You’re in the same circles. What if you run into her at an event? Do you really want her to see your worn-out face and feel relieved she left you?”


    Kristian’s gaze finally shifted, ever so slightly. “If you can’t speak properly, then don’t say anything at all.”


    He believed Freya wasn’t that kind of woman. Still, it bothered him.


    “Even if she doesn’t think that way, what about her friends?” Gerard silently apologized to Freya in his heart.


    “I won’t be attending any more social functions,” Kristian replied coldly. “Problem solved.”


    Gerard muttered, “Then they’ll probably assume you’re dead.”


    Kristian stayed silent.


    “Or that you’re disfigured and hiding out. Lack of sleep will take a significant toll on your appearance. You really want it to happen?”


    “I don’t care.”


    “You really need proper rest and real meals,” Gerard said earnestly. “The Shaw Group is a giant. If you copse one day from exhaustion, or worse—get something like stomach cancer—what then?”


    Kristian rubbed his temples, the edge of a headacheing on.


    From the way Gerard spoke, it felt like he was already nning his funeral.


    “You can leave now.”


    “But—”


    “If you don’t go, I’ll set up a few dates for you.”


    “Okay, I’m going!” Gerard dashed off in a hurry.


    He knew very well that after all this, Kristian wasn’t bluffing. He absolutely meant it.


    “Don’t forget the lunch,” Gerard called from the door. “Even if you can’t sleep well, at least eat properly.”


    Kristian didn’t answer. He just watched Gerard leave.

    After a moment of silence, he finally stood and walked toward the kitchen. Outside the building, Lawrence ran straight into Isaac and Melinda.


    “Are you Dr. Hayes?” Melinda asked gently, her smile soft and kind.


    Lawrence paused for a moment, looking from one to the other, then responded carefully, “I am, and you are?”


    There was something about the couple that felt familiar, but he couldn’t quite figure out why.


    “We’re Kristian’s parents,” Isaac said, his voice calm and sincere. “We came here to find you.”


    Lawrence was caught off guard. He hadn’t expected that. Why were they looking for him? What did they want?


    “Would you join us for lunch?” Isaac asked, his friendly smile making him seem open and polite. “There’s something we’d like to talk to you about.”


    “Of course,” Lawrence answered with a respectful nod. “Please, lead the way.” He followed them to a nearby restaurant, where they were guided to a private room tucked away from the crowd.
