    Lucas asked, “Do you think I changed because of Belinda?”


    Faye’s heart gave a tiny jolt when she heard the question. She felt that Lucas’ words seemed to have a deeper meaning. Her spine straightened as caution crept in. She forced a gentle smile, choosing her words carefully.


    “I used to think so. Honestly, I even med Belinda at first. I thought she had taken you away from me. But then, I came to understand the situation. You would get married eventually. It is only natural that the woman you love gets more of your attention than me.”


    Her voice was soft as she continued, “Once I saw it that way, I stopped feeling so bitter. I used to think you changed for the worse, that you were choosing her over me. But eventually… I’vee to understand you.”


    Lucas’ brow twitched—barely perceptible. His voice came out low and gravelly. “Hmm. That is the right way to think. If you look at it from another angle, now that I have a girlfriend, it means there is one more person to look after you, to spoil you. That does not sound so bad, right?”


    Faye nodded with a burst of enthusiasm, her eyes wide with innocence. “Yes! I think so too. I have thought it throughpletely now. Do not worry, Uncle Lucas. I will not be fighting with Belinda over your attention anymore.”


    Lucas gave a faint nod of approval. “Good. Let’s have lunch.”


    “Okay.”


    They fell into silence after that, finishing the meal without exchanging another word. Lucas kept his eyes down. A shadow passed through his gaze.


    Faye had responded perfectly. Every word had sounded sincere, her manner calm and natural. And yet, something did not sit right. He could not exin it, but he still felt odd.


    After the meal, Faye stood and gathered her things. She then shed a gentle smile and said goodbye to Lucas before leaving.

    As soon as she stepped out of Lucas’ office, the mask slipped. Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly, a glint of calction surfacing behind them.


    Later that evening, Lucas had another social engagement to attend. Belinda did note home for dinner either. She had arranged to meet Bethany and Johnson for a meal.


    Johnson and Bethany both showed up on time, and once the food was served, Belinda wasted no time telling them that Lucas was already aware of their suspicions about Faye.


    After that, she said, “Lucas told me that the people he assigned to monitor the guards have not found anything strange. Nothing at all. That only makes Faye seem more suspicious, does it not?”
