《Fragments of Memories 2: Beautiful Stranger》 Chapter One: The Ex-Wife Chapter One: The Ex-Wife January 15, 2020 With a burgundy ss on the folding table, ine poured wine into it once more. She then settled herself on the wooden bistro chair that was facing towards the open shore of Boracay Beach. It was four in the morning. As usual, she couldn''t seem to fall asleep not until midnight falls or the sun rises. It''s been one hell of a month of moving from ce to ce. She stayed at a hotel somewhere in the Visayas; from Iloilo to Cebu. From there, she flew to Pano then El Nido. She will fly back to Man on the next day to settle in the condo unit she invested in. Her real work will start by then. She could not get any more nervous about it even though she had been prepping for it for almost a month. ine sipped her wine. She took her time clearing the ss. She wanted to savor every drop as if it would take her forever to taste it ever again. After emptying her ss, she looked up in the sky. She could hardly see the moon up there. Even the stars seemed like hiding away from her sight. Perhaps, thick clouds tucked them in, making the night mysteriously darker. As simr to the poet''s belief, Danica Gim, ine also believed that people were like the moon. Sometimes, you need to disappear before you can return in full. Full. The first andst time she feltplete was three years ago. Unfortunately, it didn''tst for long. The feeling of ipleteness crashed back into her. Something''s not right. Something''s lost. Looking back gave ine plenty of regrets. She wished she didn''t do that, she wished she didn''t say this, she wished she wasn''t born like this. But it was unfair to wish for thetter. Too many wrong decisions have been made that are hard to undo. ine heaved a deep sigh. She poured wine into the ss for the nth time. When she came back, she missed not only the wine but also missed a lot of things. From materials, ces she used to go, the food she used to eat, and people who no longer wanted to see her ever again. Fate and faith brought her back. There has to be a reason why she was finally here again. She wasn''t certain if everything''s going to be okay bute what may she''s giving it a shot. A smile crept into her lips as soon she saw the light slowly taking over the dark. Boracay by far has the most striking sunrises in the country. It was a sight to behold as a tourist like her, and for locals, too, for sure. "Beautiful..." she whispered, her eyes fixed on the amazing view of the sunrise. It was a mixture of fiery red and orange teasing every tourist and beach lover to take a picture or enjoy the view. Too bad, ine forgot to bring the camera with her. She didn''t think about it right before she went out of her suite early on. It took three long sorrowful years before ine gets to see the sunrise again. It was long and stale years that were rather unprogressive for her to feel. But the long wait was finally over, her agony had diminished. A tiny string of hope kept her up, so does courage. It wouldn''t be easy. She slid her hand into the robe''s pocket and pulled the red purse out. She opened it, drawing out a reseble pouch in hand. She stared at it for a moment. A sorrowful smile etched her lips. Her hand formed to a tight fist, with the pouch still in hand, crumpling it all at once. Someone from her past gave it to her only to take it back from her in the end. Fortunately, she managed to get it back ? against that person¡¯s will, of course. How was he? For the past three years, he surely was busy hating her. Sadly, he¡¯d probably continue N?velDrama.Org content. hating her. TAN''S eyes settled on the envelope that Atty. Ramas, their family''swyer,id down on his desk. He had a serious look on his face. It was half-past nine in the evening and he rarely saw him in his office. He was wondering what made him storm into his office thiste and could not wait for the sunrise. The old man called him a few hours ago, asking him to drop by his house tonight. But he replied saying he''d visit him some other day. He was too tired to even drive himself home. He had been slept deprived for thest three nights. He was starting to get exhausted managing his job in the hospital and resolving the DM Textile''s current situation all at once. "I told you I''d pay you a visit," he told him. He continued taking his hospital gown off and hung it on the clothes rack before turning on his feet to face thewyer. He had been considered as part of their family for quite a long time. "That is urgent," he referred to the envelope he ced on his desk. "Open it," he urged. He''s got a worried look on his face. Tan followed as told so. Hastily, he opened it and pulled out something there. Basically, they were just photos. A candid whole body shot of a woman who seemed to being out from the famous clothing store in the country. A collection of both focused and stolen shots of different angles, which obviously taken from different ces in the Philippines. Different images of the same womanpiled in an envelope. And she looked disappointingly familiar. She seemed happy with her life, Tan realized. In almost every shot in her photos, she looked happy in there, her face always shing out a wide smile with shopping bags in her hands. She was still the same woman he knew. Her wardrobe still costs hundreds of thousand pesos. She used the money she received from him and his family well, it was obvious. His jaws clenched at the thought of it. He stared back at Atty. Ramas with his eyes squinting in anger. "What about this woman?" "Aren''t you curious why she''s back? ording to my source, she came back to the country two months ago. I even got her new home address. It''s in the file right in the envelope. You can check it out," He mmed the photos down the table, giving the old man a bored look on the face. "I have nothing to do with this woman," he replied almost coldly. "It has been three years already. I was just thinking what if she might¡ª" "I don''t want to talk about her," Retreating, thewyer drew a deep breath. Tan grabbed his car keys, obviously trying to dismiss the topic fully. All he wanted to do is to get back home to finally get some rest and most likely call it a day. "Aren''t you going to see her?" He looked back at him. "For what? I don''t see any reason why I should," "But she''s your wife," he answered. "Ex-wife," he corrected him. Chapter 1: Prologue Chapter 1: Prologue JULY 2012 Baran Man The rain was pouring heavily but there''s no sign of rush in ine''s steps. Meanwhile, others were running and rushing to the nearest shelter to protect themselves from the rain. She, on the other hand, didn''t seem to bother as she took her way towards the Baran Church under the heavy downpour, taking only her backpack with her. She halted at the corner a few steps from the church, not caring that she was already soaking wet. She looked up in the sky, letting the rain drip on her face. Based on the visible dark and thick clouds in the sky, ine could tell that the rain will not stop any time soon. She was unsure if the sky was sympathizing with her or was just in mocking just like the people around her. It must be thetter. She continued moving forward. ine was an illegitimate child. She grew up without her father. She spent her whole life under the care of her mother, Betina. Bettina owns a small pub house in Paranaque. She would beat the hell out of her daughter every time she woulde home drunk. She would cry hysterically, ming her and the father she didn''t even meet why her life was a mess. Just like right now. The side of her lips was swollen after she was hit with a bag when she answered her mother rudely. As a child, she felt as though she was pierced right through her chest every time her mother beat her or spat hurtful words at her. She was emotionally abused not only by her mother but also by their overcritical neighbors. She sure grew up in a toxic environment. There were tons of rumors about her existence. Rumor had it that her mom was flirting with different guys and ended up getting pregnant at an early age. Another rumor that was spreading like wildfire was that she was having an affair with a married politician that''s why she could not tell her who her father was. A few years ago, every single day she would pray desperately that she would finally get to see her father someday, hoping he could take her out from the miserable life she was having with her mom. She had tried walking on her knees towards the altar. Not only in Baran Church, but she had gone all her way to Quiapo Church and to different worship ces she could ever think of. Now, she''s seventeen. Fearless and ungracious. The tears from her hurtful past had slowly turned into grins. She''s no longer the kid who would hide at the corner of the house to pity herself. The kid started to stand for herself, even if she would appear to be rude to others, but it doesn''t matter now. It was as though she had grown fangs and horns over time. She would want it to be like that. It looked rather fitting for her image. At her age, ine had finally put herself together just to know as to why she existed, and to know about the man behind her existence; her father. She wanted to meet him. She wanted to hear the answers from his mouth as to why he didn''t show up, why didn''t he make ways to find her, and why didn''t he have the balls to do the right thing but had the balls to create a life out of their lustful desires. ine made a turn when she reached the other corner of the street. Behind the Baran Church was a small-scale bistro bar owned by an old man named Chito. That was her destination. He was a former fortune teller in the ce. She met him when she was fourteen. She would often see him hanging around the entrance of Baran Church, who sometimes offered her bread or something to eat. She had gone to his bistro bar many times especially when she had nowhere to go every time she would run away from home. It''s been six sharp in the evening but the ce didn''t appear to be very busy that night. There were no customers around except to this old man, with his back facing at her so she could not recognize who it was. They were having a conversation with Drew, the bistro bar''s waitress. She gestured to her telling her that she would just go directly into the small room at the end portion of the bar. The 25-year-old waitress nodded, indicating approval. She had a few clothes hidden inside the premises. Some of them were given to her by Mr. Chito since she usually visits the ce for whatever reason she had. When she found something to wear, she didn''t waste time getting dressed right away and headed towards the ss door beer cooler. She pulled it open and grabbed herself a bottle of alcohol. She then walked towards the bar counter and satfortably on the stool, waiting for Macon, the bartender, toe to her. "What happened to your face?" Drew asked her. "Where is Mr. Chito?" "You were the third person who was looking for Boss today," Her forehead creased. "Who were the other two? Five - Six?" "Well, it was Jemuel. He ran into me this morning and asked where the boss was. And the other one was him," with her lips, she pointed to the guy who was sitting not far from us. "Mr. Tall and Yummy." It was the guy that Drew was talking to earlier when she arrived at the ce. He was upying the seat near the entrance. Since the ce was a little dark, she could not see the face pretty well. Was he a debt collector just like Jemuel? Or was he the in-charge of the loan shark that Mr. Chito had owed? "He had been paying his obligation well, hadn''t he?" she asked, referring to the loan shark payment obligation. "The bistro was slow these past months. The rent alone was buried under the debt payment. As far as I remembered, it''s been four months now since thest time we had paid for it and six months of payment dy in 5-6 lending," ine brought the bottle into her mouth and took a shot. She winced in pain when the alcohol stung her hurt gums. She had consumed two bottles already and numbness began to saddle her up when the door mmed open. Two figures appeared, amodating themselves in. It was Jemuel and his staff. They headed closer to the counter and hissed a call to catch Macon''s attention. She took a nce at thetter. He looked rather tense seeing the neer. "Isn''t Chito here yet?" "N-not yet, sir." "You''re trying to hide him from me every time wee here, aren''t you?" Macon shook his head almost immediately. "No, sir. We''re not..." Jemuel took his hat off and without a word, whacked it to Macon''s face. He was shocked but stayed calm even though he looked scared. ine took a series of deep breaths and chose not to give any If there''s something she can''t bear to see, that is watching someone getting bullied or assaulted. She knew how unpleasant it was to be helpless while someone''s trying to hurt you. "Tell your boss if he''s not going to pay his debt, I''ll burn this bar down. Do you understand?" he threatened, tapping the bartender''s face with his palm many times over. "Shame on you," she grumbled, interrupting the fuss. Her eyes fixed on the beer. Jemuel''s attention shifted to her. Without looking, he knew how sardonic her grin was when he let go of Macon. He edged near her. "Hey, kid. Listen up. You should not interfere with the elderly if you don''t want to get yourself hurt. All I know is violence when I''m cranky and I don''t care even if you''re a kid," ine scoffed. She finally turned to face him. "I can see how old you are. You''re wrinkly and all and yet you''re still acting like a childish thug," "What a rude bitch! If your parents didn''t teach you manners, then my hand will!" Jemuel lifted his hand, threatening to p her hard on the face. She arched the corner of her mouth, showing a sarcastic grin. She scratched her brows, whispering. "What''s up with my cheek and it''s everybody''s favorite part to hit?" His forehead crumpled. "What did you just say, dummy? Are you cursing at me, huh?" ine stood from her seat, sliding her hand onto her pocket, and stared at Jemuel from head to foot. "You¡¯re not only a childish thug but also a deaf one, that¡¯s what you are,¡± "Stupid bitch!" "S-sir, Mr. Chito is on the way..." Drew interrupted themotion, looking pale in fear. She stepped in between them but since he''s fully triggered, he just pushed the waitress harshly. Drew staggered on the counter. ine''s vision had turned dim and quickly grabbed him by the cor. His eyes turned red in anger but in doesn''t seem to falter. There''s no hint of fear in her eyes. Even when Jemuel lifted his hand to p her, ine didn''t even flinch... But nothingnded on her face. "Cut it off, Mister. She''s just a kid. Just drop it," ine rolled her eyes. A kid? She nced over her shoulder to identify who it was. That old man in a button-down sport shirt that Drew was talking with earlier ago. Jemuel grabbed his hand back from that man''s grip. Content is ? 2024 N?velDrama.Org. "This bar sure has a crapload of meddlers, huh. Hey, this is not your business to deal with so don''t step in unless¡ª" before he could finish his words, ine had quickly picked up the empty bottle, and as quick as a sh, she smashed it hard on the old hag''s head. Debris sttered everywhere. Drew screamed. Jemuel dropped on the ground, pletely knocked out. The meddling man could not believe what he just saw right before him. "SO, your boss didn''t hit her at all, is that what you''re trying to mean, Mr. Gomez?" The officer-in- charge was talking to Jemuel¡¯s staff, trying to get some information that could help resolve the situation. He had the statement folder in hand, containing each of their reports. They all ended up in the police station after the incident. "Yes, chief," The investigator turned to face her, his eyes filled with doubts and questions. ine uncrossed her arms. At the other side of the desk were Jose and Jemuel, his head was bandaged. Drew and Macon were fidgeting on their seat next to ine. She could not trust their acting power and prowess. On the left side, was the meddling guy. She found outter on that he was a fresh graduate of Medicine. His arms were folded across his chest, listening intently at them. He was the one who gave first aid to Jemuel right before the cops came into the picture. She guessed she''s all alone now. All she could do to get out of this situation was to rely on her God- given talent; making up stories. ine sniffed aloud, enough to get their attention. Macon and Drew stared at her in utter disbelief when she started sobbing. Jose and Jemuel looked at each other hearing her talking in a crack voice; the thing that she didn¡¯t do back in the bar. "W-what do you mean, sir? You are trusting them more than I? I am the victim here. I didn''t do anything wrong," The investigator cleared his throat. "I didn''t say I believe them or even you. There''s no CCTV in the bar hence this should be investigated thoroughly before we conclude. That''s why I need you to cooperate," he exined. ine faked a tear, wiping it off of her eyes as dramatically as she could. With trembling lips, she extended over the desk of the officer-in-charge, pointing at her puffy lips. Even the doctor beside her shifted his eyes on her, particrly on her lips. "Do you know how painful it is to be pped hard on the face, Sir? Has someone ever done that to you? I can barely feel my face anymore. That''s how terrible it was," she then leaned closer with a serious look on the face. "My parents neverid a hand on me ever. But this man just did it to me and it''s killing me because nobody seemed to care. This is abuse. I deserve justice to steer clear of future trauma!" She sniffled once again for more dramatic effect before turning on her heels and slumped back to the chair. She leaned backward, wiping her eyes even though there weren''t any tearsing from it. "She''s lying, Chief! I didn''t do that to her. That kid was rude as hell. She clearly does not have respect for the elderly!" The investigator cleared his throat. His constant sighing trying to weigh the situation seemed to exhaust him. "This won''t end with different stories on each side," he turned to the doctor who had been silent for minutes. "How about you, Doctor? Tell me what you have witnessed there. Let''s put an end to this," ine turned to her side to face him. He was looking at her. No. He has been watching her closely. "I''m not a licensed doctor yet, Officer," he cleared up. ine earlier decided to call him good-looking. She was observing him fleetingly when he rushed to Jemuel to aid him. She can''t find the exact words to describe the man. Being a doctor does not fit him. He was rather qualified in the modeling industry or showbiz. Hollywood, perhaps. "Tell me what exactly happened," the investigatormanded him. The police officer was asking him a question but why the heck does this guy keep looking at her? Is he going to rat her out? She gave him a warning look. He should not dare. He nced away from her and said, " Yeah, I was there, Officer. I saw everything," Chapter 47: EPILOGUE Chapter 47: EPILOGUE One and a half yearter Tan just finished bathing, although he was in his sleeping clothes, his towel was still on his head to dry his hair after he emerged from the bathroom. He looked at the clock. Eight in the evening. He went home on time as usual. He arrived to ine ying with Sean and Thera¡¯s twins a while back. They ate dinner together with the couple. After eating, Jassy Mika started throwing tantrums but turned quiet when ine carried and Text ? owned by N?velDrama.Org. entertained her. They decided to bring her to their room while Lucah Gabrielle was brought to the guest room by Thera and Sean to be put to sleep. They deserve to be happy after all they¡¯ve been through. He went near the bed, sweetly gazed at ine. He knew she was ready to be a good mother. And he will do everything to be a good model in the eyes of their future children. He raised his hand to push away the strand of hair on his wife¡¯s face. ine slightly moaned and opened her eye after a while. ¡°You fell asleep¡ª¡± ¡°Sshh¡¡± Signaled to be quiet and he nodded. ¡°Do you think we could put her back in Thera¡¯s room without waking her?¡± he whispered. ¡°She¡¯s a heavy sleeper, I heard,¡± ine whispered back. Afraid he might really wake the baby up. Tan gently and carefully scooped Jassy Mika up in his arms while ine carefully got off the bed. Warmth rush through him when the baby slightly opened its eyes, stared at him before going back to sleep. He looked to ine who smiled at him.She held on his arm and they walked together towards Sean and Thera¡¯s room. Lucah Gabrielle was asleep when they arrived. Sean was putting a nket on him in his customized crib. After carefullyying Jassy on the bed, they said their goodnight. Thera with a smile, whispered ¡°Thanks¡± before they pulled the door close and leave them. They went back to their room holding hands. ine yawned when she entered. ¡°You tire yourself¡¡± ¡°I only yed with them for a while¡ª¡± ine gazed at Tan¡¯s nner. ¡°I remember,Tomorrow Is mother¡¯s birthday, can we visit her tomorrow before dropping by Sandra¡¯s?¡± ¡°Let¡¯s do that. We haven¡¯t visited for a year.¡± ¡°Don¡¯t you have anywhere you need to be? We might be out the whole morning tomorrow.¡± ¡°I¡¯ll make time.¡± He smiled and held her hand. Bettina might have been wrong in her choice of path, but in the end, she has proven to her that no mother can resist her own child. It¡¯s a clich¨¦ but now more than ever, she believes it¡¯s true. The pain she felt during those down times, Bettina also carried double that weight. She hid her own pain and grief so well she didn¡¯t notice it before. Her husband never fails to make her feel loved and important. ¡°Why are you looking at me that way? Is there something on my face?¡± she asked when she noticed he kept staring at her. He pushed away the stray hair on her face. ¡°Thank you. I love you very much, ine. Until the next life, I¡¯d thank the Lord for giving you to me.¡± She bit her lip. The sincerity of Tan¡¯s voice suddenly made her feel teary. What good did she ever do to deserve a man like him? He made her believe she was worthy. He chose to give her love and respect even during those times she herself knew, that she was difficult to understand and so not lovable. She was imperfect. She was wed. His intense gaze hypnotic beyond reason. ¡°Do you think He¡¯ll hear us?¡± he asked. ¡°He will never fail us,¡± she answered softly. ¡°No doubt,¡± he whispered. Her nose was filled with the gentle scent of Tan¡¯s body wash and aftershave. She felt hot. Before she realize it, her hands had already slid under Tan¡¯s white shirt. Tan groaned aloud. ¡°Tease¡¡± ine closed her eyes when Tan¡¯s lips descended on hers. His arms were like the four walls of a home she wanted to live in for a long time. She removed her hand from her father and pointed to the traffic light. ¡°Yeah. It is. Give me your hand, Hailey,¡± Tan said sweetly with a smile. The child looked up to him. Smiled and reached out to her father. ¡°Here¡¡± Tan smiled at his daughter. They all crossed the road at the same time along with the other pedestrians. They were almost in the middle when Tan bumped shoulders with someone. They stopped walking. The guy stood straight. ¡°Sorry¡¡± Tan said looking up. ine was shocked. Tan was also dumbstruck.
