Remington looked at Lizetta with an approving gaze, clearly impressed by her keen insight.


    He nodded. "Yeah, Martin imed he was out of the loop about the project details, saying it was all handled by his team. He yed his part too well; back then, no one in the Dashiell family suspected a thing. But ultimately, the West family came out on top, benefiting from the whole ordeal. With Ste gone and only a severed finger found, the Wests were seen as the biggest victims. That angle somehow got overlooked."


    A chill ran down Lizetta''s spine as she grasped the underlying meaning of Remington''s words, contemting a horrifying possibility.


    "You''re not suggesting that Martin had something to do with that kidnapping, are you?"


    The mere thought was terrifying.


    Yet, Remington''s expression didn''t change in the slightest, indicating he indeed harbored such suspicions.


    "The West family made their fortune through shady dealings; their methods were never clean. Even though Mr. West had ''cleaned up'' by the time he passed, Martin grew up in that environment. How could he possibly be as virtuous as he appears?"


    If Martin was indeed behind the kidnapping, it wasn''t entirely out of the question.


    Lizetta nervously fidgeted with the hem of Remington''s shirt. "He... He wouldn''t harm his own daughter, would he?"


    Remington raised an eyebrow. "Maybe Ste''s kidnapping was an ident."


    Lizetta caught on to what he was implying. Martin had orchestrated Remington''s kidnapping, but due to Ste wearing Remington''s jacket at the time, the kidnappers took her by mistake. To correct their error, they then abducted Remington, but by then, letting Ste go was not an option.


    If Martin discovered the mix-up toote, the situation could have spiraled beyond his control.


    It was a usible scenario.


    If that were the case, then Martin truly was a victim of his own making.


    No wonder Remington''s feelings towards Ste had shifted so dramatically.


    Such suspicions, even unconfirmed, were enough to send shivers down one''s spine and ruin any remnants of a past rtionship.


    "Even if Martin wasn''t behind the kidnapping, the West family''s repeated attempts to harm you and our children... The first time, I believed it was all Mrs. West''s doing. The second time, if the Wests and Ste still think they can y innocent, they''re really taking me for a fool."


    Remington gently caressed Lizetta''s cold cheek as he spoke.


    "How could I possibly show mercy to someone who''s repeatedly tried to harm me, someone with the heart of a serpent?"


    As he patiently exined, Lizetta realized she had indeed wronged him.


    Feeling a mix of guilt and embarrassment, she averted her gaze, her cheeks flushing slightly.


    "Then why didn''t you make her keep her promise to leave Zion City?"


    Remington sighed, pinching her cheek gently before responding.


    "Liz, it''s precisely because the Wests are entangled with Daisy''s situation that I absolutely couldn''t let Ste leave the country."

    Her response came softly, yet the corners of her mouth couldn''t help but curl up slightly.


    Lifting her chin, Remington raised an eyebrow. "Oh? You''ve wronged me, and that''s all you have to say?"
