It was Jolin, Apollo, and Erica, the trio that had turned up looking like they’d seen a ghost.
Lizetta couldn’t believe her eyes, and yet, there was a part of her that remained on high alert. She west
just anyone now; she was a mother, and she had her little Joy to protect.
She knew all too well how troublesome the McCoy siblings could be.
But before she could even react, the trio spun on their heels and took off as if the devil himself was on
their tail.
They vanished without a trace in less than thirty seconds, leaving behind a crowd of onlookers
whispering and staring.
Stunned, Lizetta stood there until Ynda came running up.
“Liz, is the hospital doubling as a movie set or something? I swear I just saw three zombies booking it
down the hallway. Made me think we were in some kind of virus outbreak scenario, like something out
of a horror movie.”
Lizetta just stared, “It was Jolin, Apollo, and Erica”
Ynda burst intoughter, tears streaming down her face. “What? Did they get struck by lightning for
being too sneaky?”
“A car ident?” Lizetta suggested but then shook her head. It didn’t make sense for all their injuries to
be concentrated on their faces. She recalled thest time she saw them, causing trouble in Thaddeus‘
hospital room until Cedric had to intervene.
Remembering something Remington had mentioned about taking care of it, and their terrified reaction
upon seeing her, Lizetta pieced it together. A smile yed on her lips at the thought. Being protected
felt surprisingly sweet.
“What’s got you smiling like that? Oh, and what did you mean earlier when you said you and Badass
Remington made up?” Ynda inquired, curious about the details Lizetta had omitted over the phone.
Lizetta pulled Ynda to a seat, leaving out the part about Quinn as she exined everything else.
“Yoli, I know it sounds pathetic, but standing outside that ICU, thinking he was gone, I felt like my world
was copsing. Right then, I realized that losing him forever hurt more than not being loved by him. He
never betrayed our marriage. These past four years, he might have been distant, but he never
neglected me materially. His only fault was not loving me, but he thought I had betrayed him with that
incident. It’s understandable why he felt that way. From when I was eight until I turned eighteen, he
protected me for ten years. I’ve only been fighting for our marriage for two. Can’t I try a little longer?”
Lizetta looked at Ynda with hopeful, sparkling eyes, vibrant with life and dreams for the future.
Ynda couldn’t bring herself to dampen her spirits. She too wanted Lizetta to be happy.
Everyone dreamed of having a hero to protect them from harm, and to Lizetta, Remington was that
hero.
Ynda remembered witnessing Remington’s extreme affection for Lizetta on several asions.
Like the time in junior high when some troublemakers made inappropriatements at Lizetta, and
Remington chased them through the streets until they were crying for mercy.

Or the time during a thunderstorm, Remington carried Lizetta all the way to her ssroom because she
had a stomachache from eating too much cold food during her period. He didn’t want her to walk in the
rain and make it worse.
Even the most stoic of hearts would melt under such care, especially when it came from Remington, a
man at the pinnacle of Zion City’s elite, blessed by fate itself.
Ynda knew, if she were in Lizetta’s shoes, she’d probably be even more head over heels.
But the stark difference in their social standings was a hard reality.
Ynda had seen the toll it took on Lizetta in their marriage, and she could only hope that now, with
their baby on the way, Remington would take good care of her and spare her any more heartache.
Squeezing Lizetta’s cheek, Ynda shared a piece of wisdom, “They say you shouldn’t meet someone
too dazzling in your youth, or you’ll spend the rest of your life haunted by what could have been.”
