Liam''s heart plummeted. Staring into Soren''s dark, mocking eyes, he was almost certain that Soren''s words were a direct warning to him.
After days of these veiled threats, he couldn''t take it anymore. He rushed forward and dropped to his knees before Soren''s bed.
"Soren, I know I was wrong! I shouldn''t have said those awful things to Evangeline. I''ll never do it again, I swear. Please, forgive me."
"Everything I did back then... it was just to get her to leave on her own, so you and Poppy could be together without any trouble."
Liam didn''t know how much Soren knew, but he instinctively kept the fake pregnancy a secret. It was clear that Evangeline and Soren were over. The role of Mrs. Fawkes would likely go to Poppy in the end, and he couldn''t afford to cross her. Besides, he wasplicit. Betraying Poppy would mean betraying himself, and he''d be caught in the middle with no one on his side. Liam gritted his teeth and took the gamble.
To his relief, Soren seemed genuinely unaware. He nced down at Liam, not with anger, but with a gentle tone. "What are you doing?"
He let out a low chuckle. "I''m not going to hold a grudge over something from years ago."
Soren was a man of his word, but for some reason, Liam''s heart still pounded with fear. If Soren wasn''t settling the score for past events, did that mean he would settle it for current ones?
As if reading his mind, Soren continued, "Someone within the Fawkes family conspired with the Lockridges. My being attacked was rted to their collusion."
"Who do you think it was?"
Soren hadn''t told anyone he had taken the bullet for Evangeline, so Liam was unaware of the full story. Hearing this, he was stunned.
Someone wanted to harm Soren?
Few people had direct ess to the Fawkes family''s security detail, and even fewer could meddle without raising suspicion. Poppy, the Fawkes family members Gregory they were the ones with the most contact, the ones who wouldn''t arouse suspicion. But Liam quickly dismissed them. Poppy and the family would never hurt Soren. Gregory had no motive.
Then, a thought began to form in his mind.
He spoke slowly. "Soren, I''m not trying to stir up trouble, but of all the to the Fawkes
perheated Evangeline
family right f how only
has dealings with the Lockridges. And she''s the only one who benefits if you get hurt. Maybe..."
Before he could finish, Soren lifted his gaze and cut him off. "I took that bullet for Evangeline."
Liam pressed on. "Then maybe Evangeline was just putting on a show?"
Soren''s gaze darkened, but this time he remained silent.
Just as Liam was about to borate on his theory, his phone rang. He pulled it from his pocket and saw Poppy''s name on the screen. He froze. He and Poppy had been in frequent contact over the past few days, discussing the fake pregnancy and the situation with Soren and Evangeline.
Worried he''d be found out, Liam didn''t dare answer. But the phone kept ringing, and Soren''s eyes were fixed on him. He had no choice. He reluctantly epted the call.
Just as he did, the call ended.
"Poppy says the bodyguards keep stopping her when she tries to see you," Liam improvised, his mind racing. “She wants me to convince you to meet with her."
"Soren, I know you just had a near-death experience and you need some peace and quiet," he continued quickly. "I''ll call Poppy back and tell her to wait a little longer."
