"And now you''re actually defending the one who started all of this?"
"Just shut up!"
Hank''s face turned bright red, every bit of self-control snapping in an instant. He lunged forward, reaching through the bars to grab Reese''s wrist, squeezing so hard it felt like he was trying to break her bones.
"You were freaking out in the car, making Mom lose focus and crash! You killed her! All these years, you''ve never felt guilty for a second. Instead, you throw the me on Grace. How could you be so heartless?"
Reese''s wrist throbbed with pain, but her chest hurt even more. She jerked her arm, desperate to break free, and scratched Hank''s hand with her nails, leaving lines of blood.
"Heartless? Me?
"You spent all this time ming me for Mom''s death, while treating Grace like some stand-in for her!
"After all these years, do you even remember Mom? Do you ever dream about her? Doesn''t it bother you that she might never rest in peace?"
The pain finally made Hank let go. He stepped back, pressing his bleeding hand, shaking his head hard.
"No! I haven''t! I never saw Grace as Mom''s recement! Don''t think you can say whatever you want and I''ll go soft on you, Reese!"
"What''s going on in here?"
Two officers rushed in, blocking Hank as he tried to move toward Reese again.
"This is a police station, Mr. Meyer. Please leave."
Hank red at Reese over the officers'' shoulders, his eyes ice cold. "I was going to bail you out, but you know what? You can stay here a few more days and think about what you''ve done.
"I never should''ve cared about you at all."
Reese leaned against the wall, watching him storm off. Cold seeped into her bones. A single tear slipped down her cheek, but she wiped it away hard, her jaw set.
"I don''t need your pity. I''m not a kid anymore."
She sniffed, dropping back into the corner, Hank''s words echoing in her mind.
If the police gave Grace that
recording how could anything have gone wrong with it? If Grace wanted to mess with the evidence she must have brought her own recording from the start.
She''d been young back then, but she still remembered that one of the officers had said the driver had been drinking, even though his blood alcohol level wasn''t that high. Normally, he shouldn''t have reacted so slowly.
And there was that time when she was rear-ended. It happened right after Sebastian realized who Sofia really was and decided to send her back to Brookfield, right after Grace called Sebastian and he turned her down.
There was no way all of this was just a coincidence. Both idents were probably Grace''s doing.
Leslie showed up that day. Was that just luck, or had Grace nned that too?
Either way, Reese was going to figure out the truth. She''d clear her name, and she''d make sure her mother got justice.
God, Hank really was a fool. He actually let Grace take Mom''s ce.
Outside Iron Financial, Tara was chatting with the receptionist, but her eyes kept flicking to the front doors.
She was waiting to see what would happen next.
When Zach came back, would he be alone, or would Reese be with him?
A ck G-Wagon rolled up and Zach climbed out, looking furious.
Tara finally let out a breath, feeling a wave of relief she couldn''t quite hide. So, Reese hadn''t taken Zach up on his offer.
"Reese got arrested, and you''re happy about that?"
Zach''s voice was so cold it made Tara freeze. He''d seen right through her.
"No, it''s not that," she stammered. "I just... didn''t expect it, that''s all."
"Didn''t expect it?"
Zach''sugh was sharp and cold. He stepped up close, towering over her, every bit of his expression showing just how much he couldn''t stand her.
