Since he thought this marriage was something she''d begged for, Reese figured it was time to be honest andy everything out.
She was ready to tell him the truth-that she knew everything, and she wanted a divorce.-
Right then, her phone rang. Sebastian shot her a quick look and held a finger to his lips, telling her to keep quiet.
"Hey. What''s up?"
Reese nced at the caller ID. Sofia. Whatever Sofia said made Sebastian smile, just a little. “Okay, I''ll head over now."
"I need to go to the office. If there''s something you want to talk about, we can find some timeter."
He hung up, and just like that, the cold, distant version of Sebastian was back. He walked out, closing the door behind him.
Reese opened herptop again, feeling a bitter littleugh rise in her chest.
So, Sebastian really did care about this kid. He couldn''t even wait-he had to rush off to Sofia and report on the baby, didn''t he?
She wondered what they''d do when they found out she''d already ended the pregnancy.
Picking up her phone, Reese sent a message to herwyer.
[George, if I have evidence that would hurt Sebastian, can you guarantee I''ll get full custody of my son?]
It waste, and she wasn''t expecting a reply. She put her phone down, but out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Robbie standing in the hallway, holding onto the railing, looking at her with a cold stare.
"Mom, why are you so useless?
"Dad came home and you just let him leave."
Reese blinked, caught off guard. She''s about to say something, but Robbie went
on.
"Since Dad''s gone, there''s no reason for me to stay here either. I''m going back to the main house."
He turned and knocked on the nanny''s door, woke her up, and started packing his stuff.
"Robbie, it''ste. It''s not safe for you. Let me take you tomorrow," Reese tried. But he was set on leaving. He shoved past her, voice sharp. "Don''t touch me!"
"I thought after your checkup today, Dad would stay with you tonight. Looks like I wasted my time.
"If I''d known, I would''ve gone to Auntie Sofia''s. At least I could''ve spent more time with Dad."
He grabbed the nanny''s hand and walked off without looking back.
Reese just stood there in the nursery, not moving for a long time. Only then did she finally understand what Robbie meant.
Her stomach started to ache again. Mechanically, she turned up the heat on the AC.
Shey down on the couch, phone in hand. After a moment''s hesitation, she deleted the message she''d sent to herwyer.
If even her son thought so little of her, maybe it was better to give up custody and get something more worthwhile in return.
The next morning, Reese was jolted awake by her phone ringing.
"Reese, do you have any idea how to be a mother? How could you let Robbie
leave by himself in the middle of the night?
"Did you even think about what could''ve happened to him on the way?
"What has the Ratcliff family ever done to deserve this from you?
"You drugged Sebastian and got yourself pregnant. He married you out of responsibility. Has he ever treated you badly?
"And you''re still not satisfied. He came homete and you picked a fight, made him leave!
"You are the most heartless woman I''ve ever met. You don''t care about your own son or husband!"
Sebatian''s mother Jane was relentless on the other end, every word worse than thest.
Reese tossed her phone aside, put it on silent, and headed into the bathroom.
Who knows what Robbie told herst night? Apparently, everything was Reese''s fault now.
When she came out of the bathroom, the call had finally ended. There was a new message from George.
[Sorry, Ms. Meyer, I didn''t see your messagest night.]
[I noticed you deleted it. Was it important?]
Reese leaned back on the sofa and replied. [Nothing important. If I took it back, it doesn''t matter.
Please handle the divorce as quickly as possible.]
She put her phone down and stared nkly for a moment.
Her mind wandered back to the day she found out she was pregnant with Robbie.
She had just left the hospital and was sitting in her car.
She hadn''t nned on keeping the baby-until the radio suddenly yed a line:
He came all this way for me, so how could I turn him away?
Suddenly, she''d started crying, and in that moment, she decided she''d keep Robbie, whether or not the Ratcliffs epted him.
But now...
Reese shook herself out of her thoughts and started getting ready to go to the research institute.
