Through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, the city skyline stretched out endlessly.
Joel was recovering very well. Dressed infortable loungewear, hisplexion looked perfectly normal, and that familiar gentle demeanor still rested on his features. Over the past three years, he had noticeably matured.
"Make yourself at home," Joel said, gesturing around. "Can I get you anything to drink? Tea, coffee? Or some juice?"
"I can get it myself!" Eleanor replied, not wanting him to go through the trouble.
She brought over two sses of warm water and looked him up and down with concern. "How are you feeling? Does it still hurt?"
"Much better. The wound just itches a bit since it''s healing and growing new tissue." Joel took his ss and smiled. "Don''t worry, the doctor said my recovery is going perfectly."
Eleanor breathed a sigh of relief. Just then, Joel''s phone rang. It was hiswyer.
When he returned from taking the call, he looked at Eleanor. "Faye Yeaton''s sentencing should happen next month at the earliest."
Holding her ss, Eleanor fell silent for a moment.
Joel looked at her with a gentle, unwavering gaze. "Ellie, don''t waste any more energy worrying about this. This is the price she has to pay. Let''s just consider the matter closed."
Eleanor nodded. "Yeah."
A brief silence settled between them before Eleanor looked around the new ce. "It''s beautiful. The view is incredible."
"Yeah! When I first looked at this ce, this unobstructed view was exactly what sold me." Joel smiled. "Sometimes, when work gets exhausting, just looking out at the horizon really helps me unwind."
"So, isn''t it about time you found a woman to share it with?" Eleanor asked with a smile.
Joel chuckled softly. "Being single is fine too. I''m used to it."
Eleanor didn''t push the topic. Love was a funny thing; sometimes it hit you when you least expected it, and there was no use forcing it.
They moved on to discussing Eleanor''s research direction. Joel was full of confidence and encouragement, firmly believing she was on the right path.
Around two in the afternoon, Eleanor headed back to theb for a bit.
Later that weekend afternoon, Eleanor received a call from Ellington. He informed her that a seat had been reserved for her at tomorrow''s Goodwin Technologies productunch and asked her to attend.
As one of the shareholders of Goodwin & Co., it was only natural for her to have a seat there. Since she had already promised Joel she would be there, she absolutely had to go.
The next morning, Eleanor sat at her vanity. She usually went bare-faced at theb, but today''s event called for full makeup.
Her eyebrows were perfectly
shaped, her eyes bright and sharp. A sweep of lipstick gave her a vibrant, glowingplexion. She let her slight curled hair fall loosely over her shoulders. Dressed in a perfectly tailored cream-white skirt suit, she looked professional andmanding, yet unmistakably elegant.
"Mommy, you look so pretty!" Evelyn admired her from the side, holding one of
Eleanor''s lipsticks and pretending to apply it to her own mouth.
Eleanorughed, grabbed a tube of lip balm, and swiped it over Evelyn''s lips. The little girl was thrilled, holding a hand mirror and examining herself from every angle. She didn''t even realize she already had an incredibly gorgeous little face. The older she got, the more she took after her father.
"Mommy, am I pretty?" Evelyn looked up, asking the question with utmost seriousness.
Eleanor stared at her for a few seconds. "Yes, very pretty."
"When I grow up, I want to be as pretty as you."
"You will be." Eleanor ruffled her daughter''s hair, her eyes brimming with love.
Eleanor dropped Evelyn off at Goodwin Manor. Gina came out to greet her granddaughter. Seeing Eleanor, she offered a warm smile. "Come over for dinner tonight!"
Eleanor paused for a second before giving a slight nod. "I''ll see how things go, Gina."
"Alright." Gina smiled back, not wanting to pressure her.
Eleanor arrived at the venue for the Goodwin Technologiesunch. As soon as she stepped into the hall, she spottedn standing among a group of guests. He was dressed formally today as well, wearing a charcoal-gray suit with a matching te. His hair was slicked back and a pair of gold-rimmed sses rested on the bridge of his nose, making him look exceptionally mature and striking.
He noticed Eleanor, and as his gaze locked onto hers, a sh of utter amazement
shone in his eyes, apanied by a gentle, weing smile.
