Chapter 784: Threw me out of his life

Chapter 784: Threw me out of his life

Denzel looked over the document clipped to the heavy cardboard backing, ticking off thest of the equipment needed for the new batch of trainers.

He scrawled his signature at the bottom and handed the board to his junior, who was waiting to begin the procurement process.

"Get these ordered tonight," he directed.

He checked his watch: six in the evening. The day had been long, but his mind had never quite left the silent house where he’d left Juniper. He grabbed his phone and keys from the desk, heading straight for his car.

The drive back was shorter. When he arrived, he entered the security code into the keypad and stepped inside.

To his surprise, the house felt exceptionally quiet. The air was still, and the aggressive spike of Juniper’s pheromones had fadedpletely.

Denzel set his keys on the entryway table, his eyes moving toward the stairs.

"Denzel!" Juniper stepped out from the kitchen, a ss of water gripped in her hand. "I just woke up. I was nning to leave as soon as I finished this."

"Do you feel better?" Denzel asked, his eyes scanning her face for the telltale signs of fever.

"Much better. Thank you for helping me. If not for you, I would have been in God knows what condition," she muttered, her fingers wrapping tighter around the ss as she looked down at the floor.

"I’m d you’re better now," Denzel replied simply, his tone steady.

"Then, I must leave. I won’t bother you any longer," Juniper pronounced, her Alpha pride beginning to reassemble itself now that the haze had lifted.

"It’ste. I’ll drop you home," Denzel offered, already reaching for his keys on the entryway table.

"I’ve already troubled you so much," Juniper insisted. She turned back toward the kitchen to put her ss away, her movements sharp and efficient. But as she set the ss into the sink, a loud growl rumbled through her stomach.

Juniper froze, her shoulders tensing in hunger and embarrassment.

"You’re hungry," Denzel said, the corner of his mouth twitching as he bypassed the table and headed straight for the refrigerator to fetch a cold water bottle. "Why didn’t you eat anything?" Denzel asked, his tone more observant than using.

"I told you, I slept," Juniper replied, her voice gaining a bit of its usual Alpha edge as she tried to mask her hunger. "My body just shut down the moment I hit the mattress."

"Then let’s have dinner together," Denzel suggested. He uncapped a fresh water bottle and took a slow drink, his eyes never leaving hers.

"I would even suggest you stay the night. It’s already getting dark, and the ride to the East District is long. You won’t find a cab out here, either, you’d have to walk ten minutes just to reach the main road."

Juniper shifted her weight, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "I simply don’t want to trouble you any more than I already have."

"I understand," Denzel replied, setting the bottle down on the counter. "But it will be more troubling for me if you go out alone. Recent incidents tell me I shouldn’t let you wander off by yourself in this state."

He didn’t have to say it, they both knew that a lone Alpha she-wolf whose heat had just been triggered was a beacon for trouble, even with suppressants in her system.

"After freshening up, I’ll cook for us," Denzel said, heading upstairs without waiting for an argument.

Juniper watched him go, but the idea of sitting idle while he worked felt wrong. Despite not being good in cooking, she couldn’t just wait to be served after everything he’d done.

She moved to the refrigerator and scanned the shelves until her eyesnded on two packets of meat. She pulled them out along with a couple of eggs and began lining up the other ingredients on the counter.

Juniper worked efficiently, the simple task helping her ground herself. She ced the skillet on the me and let it heat up. She rolled the meat into small balls, pressing them onto the hot surface to brown, then set a second pan to fry the eggs.

By the time Denzel came back downstairs, she was almost finished. She looked up and smiled. "I already cooked for us."

She went back to the refrigerator and took out a container of garlic butter, adding a dollop to the meat.

Denzel stopped, watching her te the food. "I told you I’d handle it, but I’m not going to turn down a meal that smells this good."

He pulled two tes from the cupboard and set them on the table nearby. "Sit."

Juniper didn’t argue this time. She slid onto a chair while Denzel served them. He sat across from her, and asked her to start.

Juniper took the first bite, the steak savory and perfectly cooked. "Mmm..." she murmured, licking her lips as she chewed. She gestured toward his te. "Start before it gets cold."

Denzel smiled slightly and began eating. The meat was tender, and he moved on to the fried egg she had ced on the side.

"This should have some wine too, right?" Juniper suggested.

"Oh, yes." Denzel stood up and walked to the wall-mounted cer. He pulled out a bottle and brought it back to the table. "Karmen gifted me this on Christmas," he said, setting two sses down. He poured a small portion for each of them before sitting back in his chair.

Juniper picked up her ss and took a sip.

She suddenly recalled the times Dominick would visit her, sharing simr meals.

Denzel noticed her expression go nk. Seeing her lost in thought, he set his fork down. "What happened? Why aren’t you eating?"

"I just recalled the past," Juniper replied. "The time when I was too happy and when I wasn’t alone." She chuckled, lowering her gaze into the te. "I regret everything. Even falling in love with Nick. He could have given me a chance. But he simply threw me out of his life."
