Lionel never in a million years imagined Hannah would be here, at Quennel''s house.
He thought his n was foolproof. He thought he could stall long enough to message Cherry and have her steal the letter. But all his scheming hade to nothing. Not only was Hannah already here, but the letter was probably with her.
If he had known, he never would have let Cherry take the letter back in the first ce. That way, the most crucial piece of evidence would still be in his hands.
But it was toote for regrets. The most damning part was that Hannah had heard his entire conversation with Quennel!
Lionel stood frozen, his expression a mask of horror as he stared at Hannah. His mind was aplete nk; he couldn''t think of any way to exin what he''d just said.
Given how much Hannah had grown to despise himtely, he felt that no matter what he said, it would be toote.
“Lionel, I can''t believe the letter came to you first, and because you didn''t know how to handle it, you just passed it on to me. Your methods are disgusting!"
Hannah descended the stairs, with Samuel right behind her.
Samuel had a wide, mischievous grin on his face, clearly enjoying the drama and eagerly anticipating what would happen next, especially since Lionel had already incriminated himself so thoroughly.
With things having reached this point, Lionel knew it was toote for exnations. Any excuse would be useless. But there was one thing he had to rify.
He watched as Hannah walked over and sat down on the sofa, her face an unreadable mask.
She used to wear all her emotions on her sleeve, so easy to read. But now, he couldn''t tell what she was thinking at all.
"The reason I sent you the letter is because the name on it was Quennel''s. I have no idea why it changed to my name by the time it got to you."
Lionel knew Hannah probably didn''t want to hear his excuses, but he had to try and defend himself.
"Think about it. If my name had been on it from the start, why would I have sent it to you? Wouldn''t I just be shooting myself in the foot?”
Right now, the most critical issue in his mind was why the name on the letter had changed, not why he had sent it to Hannah.
If he could just figure out why the name on the letter had been altered to his, everything else would seem insignificant.
But that was only his perspective. Hannah couldn''t care less.
Even if the name hadn''t been
changed, Hannah''s biggest issue et
was still why Lionel had sent the letter to her in the first ce, mot whose name was on it.
If he hadn''t sent the letter to her, but had instead confronted Quennel directly based on its contents, she might have respected him a little more for it. But he had done something so incredibly foolish, How could she possibly think highly” of him now?
"I don''t care whose name is on the letter. I just want to know why you sent it to me."
Hannah repeated her question, her eyes fixed on him intently.
"The letter truly said Quennel Rosenberg, Were you expecting me to confront him for you? If it was sent to you, then it was clearly, your responsibility to handle it. But you didn''t want to, so you pushed it onto me. You''re quite the expert at shifting me!"
