Quennel''s words made Lionel pause.
He hadn''t been entirely blind to that potential oue.
The idea that this incident alone wouldpletely change Hannah''s opinion of him and lead to a reconciliation was absurd, practically impossible.
But his insistence was driven by a desire to prove to Hannah that he hadn''t done such a thing, that he wasn''t the monster she saw him as.
At the same time, he wanted to show her that Quennel wasn''t as perfect as she thought.
His goal was that simple.
"I don''t think you need to say anything more to Hannah. She clearly doesn''t care. If she did, she would have sat down and listened to you properly."
Mary rolled her eyes in exasperation. "All this drama, and it''s the Rosenberg family''s name that gets dragged through the mud. One person''s mess, and the entire family has to share the shame!"
She couldn''t forget how her friends had been talking about her these past few days.
When Lionel first married Hannah, she had tried to keep it quiet. But once the otherdies found out, they pestered her with questions. When she didn''t answer, they assumed the rumors were true andunched their own investigations into Hannah. When they learned she was an orphan who grew up in an ordinary orphanage, they treated her with scorn and ridicule.
They mocked her for having lost a son, only for him to grow up in such a poor environment. They said it would have been better to quietly acknowledge him rather than throw a grand family reunion banquet.
What if people found out their family had a son with a bad background, poor upbringing, and possibly no manners? What a disgrace that would be.
Fortunately, her son had proven himself capable, and she had enjoyed a moment of triumph hutting up those gossiping women. But unfortunately, he had ended up manying Hannah, making her aughingstock once again.
For three years, those women had almost forgotten about her unimpressive daughter-inw.
Lionel had been so sessful during that time, bringing her immense pride. The same women who had once mocked her were now fawning over her.
She had finally been able to hold her head high in their presence again. But the good times didn''tst. Now, the couple was causing a scandal.
One of them had evene up to her directly, saying she should have been stricter from the start. Now that she''d married up, she''d gotten arrogant and forgotten her ce, daring to challenge her superiors.
She told her to kick the woman out of the family before she tarnished the reputation of their entire upper-ss circle.
As if she didn''t want them to divorce! But for some reason, Lionel had lost his mind.
He had already signed the divorce papers, they were on the verge of splitting, and now he was refusing to go through with it. The thought of how he hadpletely ruined her reputation in front of everyone made. her furious!
"Lionel, you need to face it. No matter what you do, Hannah will not forgive you, and she will not
reconcile with you. Just divorce her and be done with it. Don''t make this any more embarrassing than it already is. If this ends up in court, it won''t just be you who''s disgraced, it''ll be our entire family."
His grandmother, sitting on the sofa, wanted to say something.
But she knew that anything she said now would be useless. She sighed heavily and watched them in silence.
"This is our business. What we do is up to us. Even if you are my mother, you cannot interfere in my marriage."
