Chapter 1088

    ?Chapter 1088:

Something about his tone tugged at her, dangerously inviting. Her eyshes fluttered, and then, abruptly, she pushed him away with force, breaking the spell. She gulped a breath of air, fighting forposure. That was close. She had nearly let herself give in to him.

Rationality snapped back into ce, her rejection as firm as stone. “I don’t care to know. I have a boyfriend. What you just did is harassment—I could have you reported.”

The fragile smile on Jeffry’s lips disappeared at once. “End things with him.”

A scoff escaped Lydia. As if she would listen to him. “Not happening. He’ll be here any minute—you should go.”

Her words were ice, dousing whatever fire had burned between them. The heat in Jeffry’s chest vanished, reced by a bitter chill. He stared at her, face shadowed and impossible to read.

From her vantage point at the window, Evelyn had witnessed everything, her eyes burning with a hatred so sharp it was nearly physical. Why? Why had Jeffry turned her away when she’d asked for help, yet he was ready to bare his soul for that woman?

As Evelyn caught sight of Ethan appearing in the doorway, a dark glint flickered in her gaze—a hint of vengeance taking shape.

Evelyn slipped out the side door and approached Ethan with purposeful steps. “Mr. Morrison, did you catch that scene? My divorce papers are barely dry, and your employee is already throwing herself at my ex-husband.”

Ethan, wrapped in a charcoal overcoat with a crisp navy suit beneath, stood perfectly still. His features gave nothing away as he watched Jeffry and Lydia in the distance, his expression unreadable.

Unfazed by his silence, Evelyn continued, “Maybe you haven’t heard, but Lydia used to be someone’s mistress. Are men all drawn to women like her? Apparently, my ex was, and now it seems you are no exception. Do men really not mind a woman with a past like that?”

Though there was no going back for her and Jeffry, Evelyn was determined not to let Lydia walk away triumphant. Ethan’s obvious concern for Lydia made his feelings all too clear. But a man like him, with an impable background and a budding career in politics, would never seriously consider a woman with such baggage.

Evelyn wanted to see how Lydia would fare with no one left in her corner. Without Ethan’s protection, how long could Lydia keep luring men? But when her words faded, Ethan remained a statue, unmoved.

Refusing to give up, Evelyn added, “Mr. Morrison, don’t you find this whole situation a little pathetic? Jeffry never cared for me, and the woman you love is obsessed with him. Fate really does have a twisted sense of humor. I almost pity you, honestly. You’re young, aplished, thoughtful—if I were in her ce, I’d never let you go…”

Evelyn’s voice trailed off, her patience wearing thin. Was this man oblivious, or just immune? She hadid everything bare, and still, he showed no reaction whatsoever. Wasn’t Ethan supposed to have feelings for Lydia? So why didn’t he seem the least bit bothered watching Lydia get close to Jeffry?

Evelyn felt her patience unraveling. The only reason she’d bothered to approach Ethan in the first ce was to nt seeds of doubt, hoping he’d turn against Lydia and get Lydia booted from the National Security Bureau. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have wasted a single word on him. She drew a sharp breath and tried again. “Mr. Morrison—”

Ethan interjected with a tone as t as stone, “Don’t waste your energy. Whatever you’re angling for isn’t going to happen.”

It felt like a physical blow—Evelyn’s chest tightened, as if she’d been struck. Had this man lost his mind? Even now, he was still taking Lydia’s side. What was it about that woman that drew men in and made them want to protect her? Her patience snapped. All pretense gone, she hissed, “Mr. Morrison, are you seriously not angry? The woman you care about is practically in another man’s arms, and you’re just going to stand there and watch? If I were in your position, I’d do anything to keep the person I loved.” Just like she had tried to do with Jeffry.
