Chapter 1040:
A few moments passed as Jerry steadied his breathing. “We’re staring at billions in losses today. Thepany’s cash flow is about to fall apart. What are we supposed to do now? I’ve kept out of trouble in the business field. Who would want to destroy the Morgan Group like this?”
Elena’s warning about not crossing Lydia suddenly echoed in Evelyn’s mind. Could Lydia really be behind all this? But it couldn’t be.
Uneasy, Evelyn tried to sound confident. “Dad, there’s no shortage ofpetitors who’d love to see us fail. What matters most is finding an investor who can help us recover.”
Jerry’s grip tightened around her hand. “Evelyn, I need you to handle this. Go to Jeffry and have him sign a fifty-billion contract with us.”
Evelyn went silent, struggling to form a proper response.
With a scowl, Jerry said, “You’re his wife. I can’t imagine he’d turn you down when our family needs his help.”
A forced smile tugged at Evelyn’s lips. “Don’t worry, Dad. I’ll talk to him as soon as I get home.”
Once back at Hillside Manor, Evelyn made sure the kitchen was busy with Jeffry’s favorite dishes.
Jeffry showed up around noon, heading straight to his study without a word. Bncing the tray, Evelyn paused at the study door and gave it a gentle knock.
A low voice answered from inside, “Come in.”
Trying to keep things light, Evelyn opened the door and managed a sweet smile. “Jeffry, I made your favorite food. Will you have some?”
The moment Jeffry’s gazended on Evelyn, his face turned cold. Spread across his desk were several photos—evidence of Evelyn causing amotion at the National Security Bureau this morning.
Failing to note his icy stare, Evelyn set the tray down on the table and walked over to him. Her eyes softened as she looked at Jeffry. “I need to ask you for something…”
“Why did you go see her?” Jeffry cut her off, his tone t and unreadable.
Confusion clouded Evelyn’s face. “Jeffry, what is this about?”

Without hesitation, Jeffry reached for the stack of photos and tossed them onto herp.
When Evelyn’s eyesnded on the images, herplexion faded, her lips quivering as she tried to speak. “Jeffry, I—”
Jeffry’s expression remained icy, his stare unflinching. “Let’s not pretend. We both know this marriage is purely a business arrangement. You crossed the line. Have you considered the consequences?”
A numb, cold sensation crept through Evelyn’s body, making her feel rooted to the floor. Her mind spun, but she couldn’t form a response to defend herself. It was true—she had broken their arrangement. Their agreement clearly stated non-interference. She just refused to let another woman upy his heart. No matter what, she had married him.
Her gaze flickered uncertainly before she finally whispered, “I’m sorry, Jeffry. I was only trying to protect the Harper family’s reputation…”
A harsh, cold gleam shed in Jeffry’s eyes. “Don’t forget your ce. If you cross the line again, this agreement ends.”
Divorce would be the oue if their contract fell apart.
Evelyn’s cheeks drained of color as she stared at the floor, desperately masking the storm of anger swirling inside. He actually threatened to end their marriage because of that seductress! Every ounce of me in her heart shifted to Lydia—if not for her, Jeffry wouldn’t even think of a divorce. Resentment for Lydia burned fiercely.
