Chapter 1010:
In the Shadow Base of Avaloria, Earle reviewed thetest report. An organ trafficking syndicate in Houis had been entirely eliminated. Not a single life had been left behind. His men found nothing. No clues, no trails, not even a whisper about who was responsible.
Without his mask, Earle’s strikingly androgynous face was all sharp edges and quiet danger. His emerald eyes shimmered with an icy focus. His mind drifted to the Azure Dragon Unit Base, still rooted in Houis. Some situations demanded speed. Some individuals had to vanish.
The sky had turned a deep, battered ck. From the trees, birds shrieked with shrill, unsettling calls.
He picked up the phone and dialed a number from the. “Still want Wesley’s position?”
Ellis returned to his apartment and went straight to the bathroom. He lowered his head as icy water streamed down, washing away the lingering sweat clinging to his skin. Removing his sses, he revealed a chest and back marked with bruises and scrapes.
He acted as if he hadn’t noticed them—drying off, slipping into his pajamas, and walking out of the bathroom.
His face remained calm, carrying the sameposed appearance he always wore. However, the slippers on the wrong feet betrayed him—subtle proof that something beneath the surface wasn’t right.
Ellis shut his eyes, but the sounds of Charlette’s moaning still haunted his memory. The events of the day hadpletely caught him off bnce. Still, he wasn’t the type to regret something he had done.
At exactly three in the morning, he opened his eyes again, fully awake and mentally sharp. He reached for his phone and called Jeffry.
The ringing jolted Jeffry out of a deep sleep. For a second, he squinted at the time, thinking he had imagined it. Ellis was famously strict with his schedule, always asleep before midnight without exception. This was the first time he had ever received ate-night call from Ellis. It had to be something important.
Springing upright, Jeffry answered the call immediately. “What’s happening?”
Ellis responded in a steady, level tone. “Jeffry, I’ve decided I want to get married. I can’t step away from theb right now, so I need you to help me organize the proposal.”

“What?” Jeffry’s brow furrowed, unsure if he had heard correctly. Was it truly Ellis on the line, or had Louis gotten hold of Ellis’ phone? Lately, Louis had practically moved into the Johnson estate. If Kiera weren’t still too young, he likely would have proposed by now. But Ellis? He was the type buried in research, bound to his duty, with loyalty to his country above all else.
The thought of Ellis talking about marriage had never once crossed Jeffry’s mind. “Are you really sure about this?” Jeffry asked cautiously.
Ellis didn’t hesitate. “Yes.” Though his word was soft, the conviction behind it was undeniable.
Since it wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision, Jeffry saw no reason to question it. “Alright then. I’ll handle the entire thing.”
“Appreciate it, Jeffry.”
Just as Ellis was about to end the call, Jeffry’s voice stopped him. “Ellis.”
Ellis raised the phone back to his ear.
Jeffry lowered his gaze, his expression unreadable as he asked, “Do you love her?”
A long silence followed on Ellis’s end. Was love the right word for what he felt for Charlette? He couldn’t find the words to exin it, but he knew without doubt—she stood apart from everyone else. No matter where he was—outside theb, in the cafeteria, or just walking past strangers—his eyes were always drawn to her first.
