    Once Lizzie was out of earshot, the hard edge in Wesley’s expression softened. “What’s the connection between your mentor and the military?” he asked, his voice low and serious.


    Elena froze, like a deer caught in headlights, unsure how to answer. Her mentor’s identity was not something she could just blurt out.


    Wesley raised an eyebrow. “So you want me to help you find your mentor, but you don’t trust me?” How could she be so cold? When had he ever done anything to hurt her?


    Elena knew Wesley had a point. She looked up and met his intense, impossible-to-read gaze. “Wesley, can I really trust you?”


    Wesley almostughed. She still doubted him, even after everything. He leaned in close, his hand gripping her waist tightly. “You have no choice but to trust me,” he said through gritted teeth.


    He guessed that by taking his sapphire ne, she had basically tied herself to him.


    His fingers tightened on her waist, pulling her closer until their breaths mingled.


    The emotions in his eyes seemed genuine. Elena’s eyshes fluttered, and her fingertips lightly touched Wesley’s hand.


    Wesley’s breath hitched, and his eyes narrowed as he studied her reaction.


    “My mentor had a ring that looked just like yours,” she said. “And I found outter it was connected to the military—that’s all.”


    Her touch was so light, like a feather barely brushing his skin. His dark eyes grew even darker, and his Adam’s apple bobbed.


    Suddenly, without warning, he scooped her up in his arms. Elena instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck. She frowned. “What are you doing?”

    “Can you even walk?” he asked. “If you don’t want to miss the wedding tomorrow, stop struggling.” His voice was calm, but he started walking faster.


    He carried her back onto the yacht, grabbed the first-aid kit, and cleaned and bandaged her injury.


    When Wesley was done, he took off his ring. “This one?” he asked. “I’ll have someone look into it.” He looked serious.


    Elena said quietly, “Thank you.”


    A small smile touched Wesley’s lips. At least she was showing some gratitude.


    He steered the yacht back to the dock and, without hesitation, carried Elena back to the hotel, making sure everyone around could see them.


    Evelyn was strutting around, showing off pictures of her custom-made wedding dress from some fancy designer, when she spotted Wesley and Elena. “Oh my God, is that Wesley and Elena?” she blurted out.


    Evelyn could hardly believe her eyes. Wesley was actually carrying Elena in his arms! What was going on between those two?
