Chapter 1154

    ?Chapter 1154:

“Evie, you haven’t eaten in days. Your body can’t handle that,” I said gently as I walked closer to her.

Evie remained still, not even ncing my way. Her gaze was fixed nkly on the corner of the wall, as if she hadn’t heard a word I said. Watching her like this left me at a loss for words. I could only turn away, feeling a deep sense of helplessness.

As I left Evie’s room, I noticed Paing down the long hallway.

“Makenna, you really ought to get some rest. I’ll look after Evie,” Pa said, reaching for the food in my hands.

I hesitated, ncing up at Pa, taken aback by her offer.

Her eyes held a swirl of emotions as she spoke softly. “I know exactly what she’s going through. My family died saving me. I watched them suffer, and I understand that pain and guilt better than anyone.”

Her words struck a chord deep within me. I couldn’t help but take her hand, saying, “Pa… I feel for everything you’ve faced all these years.”

Pa shook her head, a wry smile ying on her lips. “It’s all in the past. I just… I hope I can make a difference for Evie.”

I met her gaze and nodded. “Okay, I’ll leave Evie in your care. I promise you, I’ll avenge your family. Those who hurt us will face the music.”

Pa nodded with conviction. “I believe in you.”

    Alice’s POV:

I clutched Winfred tightly, hidden within a tangled thicket, my form pressed against the cool, moist earth. I held my breath, paralyzed by the fear that even the faintest rustle might betray us.

Winfred slept serenely in my embrace, his delicate features still marked by faint trails of dried tears. His eyshes fluttered gently, as though his dreams were haunted by unrest.

As I gazed down at him, a wave of anguish washed over me. I softly stroked his back, hoping to ease his troubled sleep.

Beyond our refuge, the sound of footsteps dwindled, interwoven with the hushed voices of our pursuers.

“They can’t have slipped far. Scour every inch!”

    “Understood, sir!”

My pulse raced, my fingers gripping Winfred’s garments with desperate intensity. I remained motionless, my breaths shallow and silent, dreading discovery.

Sensing my unease, Winfred stirred, a soft whimper escaping his lips. I swiftly leaned down, my cheek brushing his forehead, and murmured, “Hush, Winfred. You’re safe with me.”

He settled, his breathing evening out, his tiny hand instinctively grasping my cor.

That fateful day, Evie and Rosaline had bravely stalled Antoni, giving Winfred and me a chance to flee.

Yet, even after breaking free from Amon’s house, safety remained elusive.

Antoni’s soldiers hunted us relentlessly, their pursuit nearly ensnaring us time and again.

Fearing to linger in the city, I led Winfred to the wilds, threading through dense forests, subsisting on meager wild fruits and sips of stream water.

Winfred’s frame grew frail, his once-vibrant countenance dimming with each passing day.
