Chapter 982

    ?Chapter 982:

After some time, when the redness in Baylee’s eyes had subsided, she said, “El, let’s go out.”

After a brief hesitation, Ellie reminded her, “Marvin might still be outside.”

“I know,” Baylee replied, straightening her clothes. “If I stay in here, he’ll probably wait outside indefinitely. I can’t avoid him forever.” She hadn’t done anything wrong. There was no reason for her to hide!

The bar was nearly empty during the daylight hours, with a hush settling over the ce like a heavy fog. The sharp click of a woman’s high heels against the ground was unmistakable.

Kaiden and Marvin instantly turned their heads, snuffing out their cigarettes.

“Baylee, I didn’t think I’d see you today,” Marvin said, his eyes fixed on her.

“I’ll wait for you to finish your conversation over there,” Ellie told Baylee. She embraced Baylee before pulling Kaiden to wait a few steps away.

Baylee met Marvin’s gaze with a cold stare.

“We need to sort things out here,” she said, pausing briefly. “Marvin, this is the end of the road for us!”

His face darkened, and he grabbed her wrist as if fearing she would run away. “What do you mean by that?”

“Exactly what it sounds like,” Baylee replied. “We’re breaking up!”

“Baylee, let’s talk this over when you’re calmer, alright?” Marvin’s voice was soft, almost pleading.

“I am calm. I’ve never been more so.”

Baylee found it absurd. Why did men always assume women were emotional when they wanted to end a rtionship? What led men to have such misconceptions?

    Marvin’s eyes bore into hers.

“If this is about what you overheard in the study today, I apologize.” He struggled to find the right words, remembering the conversation that had led to this moment. But he had tried to exin to her that those words were not what he really meant; he had no idea what else he could say.

“That’s only part of it,” Baylee said, shaking her head in disappointment. “Marvin, perhaps our rtionship was a mistake from the very start.”

“How could it be a mistake?” he asked, his voice rising in suppressed anger.

A few passersby nced their way, but Marvin paid them no mind. As a member of the Hill family, he was ustomed to being the center of attention.

“Did you fake your injury just to get into my life? When you were recovering at my ce, did you slip sleeping pills into my milk?” Baylee’s usations hung in the air.

Marvin clenched his teeth, remaining silent.

“See, Marvin, you’re inherently controlling. Don’t you get tired of pretending to be something you’re not around me? Our whole rtionship feels like a lie!”

    “I’m always myself with you.”

    “It doesn’t matter.”

Baylee didn’t want to argue. She knew it wouldn’t change anything. There was no point in fighting over something that was already broken.

Marvin had never felt so powerless. He pulled her into his arms.

The embrace was achingly familiar to Baylee. She had woken up in it countless times, but now it felt different. At this moment, Baylee felt anything but warmth. What she felt was bitterness, ced with absurdity.
