    The call concluded without receiving an answer.


    After a few seconds, the caller persisted.


    “Answer… Answer the phone! It might be an emergency regarding work!” Ellie’s voice, somewhat breathless, suggested urgency.


    Irritated, Kaiden picked up the phone, briefly pausing when he saw the screen.


    Both were close enough for Ellie to clearly see the caller ID.


    It was Carole!


    Ellie instinctively felt disgusted.


    Kaiden, about to toss the phone back onto the nightstand, was halted by Ellie.

    “Are you sure?” Kaiden reminded her of what they were currently engaged in.

    Ellie wanted to hear what Carole had to say to Kaiden!


    Kaiden pressed the answer button, ready to listen to whatever Carole had to say.


    Ellie was so close to him that she could hear the voice from the device.


    “Kaiden?” A soft voice echoed amidst the silence.


    Since Kaiden didn’t say anything, Carole hesitated and called out his name again.


    “It’s me.” Kaiden propped himself up on one elbow, his gaze fixed on the woman in his arms.


    Ellie wasn’t a very open person. Yet, surprisingly, this time, she was willing to let him answer the call, and at such a strange moment.


    Her behavior only meant that she was up to no good.


    “Were you busy just now? You didn’t answer my call,” Carole asked in her soft tone.
