Chapter 142

    ?Chapter 142:

    She seemed poised for confrontation.

Standing politely while the secretary was present, Ellie soon slouched into the chair across from Kaiden’s desk and yawned.

“What do you need, Mr. Thorpe?” She was eager to return home for some rest.

Kaiden tapped his fingers on the desk. “Where’s my gift?” So, she was summoned just for a gift inquiry?

Was this the “important matter” Bruce had mentioned?

“Miss Robbins is outside. She came to deliver a gift to you,” Ellie informed him.

Kaiden set his pen aside, fixing a steady gaze on Ellie.

Beneath his gaze, she noticed a deep, dark glint in his eyes, tinged with a hint of teasing.

Ellie felt a chill run down her spine. “Why are you staring at me like that?”

The man’s thin lips parted. “Ellie, are you feeling jealous?”

“Why would I be jealous?” Ellie retorted. “But Miss Robbins’s anger towards me, all because of you, is disrupting my work and my efficiency.”

Kaiden observed Ellie, noting only a hint of mockery on her face.

    She clearly wasn’t jealous.

This realization left him slightly discontented.

    “Rat-a-tat!”

The sound of knocking interrupted their moment.

Bruce entered, carrying a delicate kraft paper bag. He paused, eyeing Ellie briefly before cing the bag on Kaiden’s table. In a subdued tone, he announced, “Mr. Thorpe, this is the gift from Miss Robbins.” Bruce knew that Ellie had just heard about the gift. Surely it wouldn’t hurt to bring it here now, right?

Casting a nce at the kraft paper bag, Ellie inquired nonchntly, “What did Miss Robbins give him?”

She was curious to see what Essence, who aspired to be more than a friend, had presented to her husband—at least in name.

Bruce was shocked by Ellie’s inquiry and nced at Kaiden.

Kaiden seemed uninterested in Essence’s gift. His gaze urged Bruce to unwrap it.

“It’s a box of choctes.” Bruce sensed the mood was off.

He had imagined it might be a pen or some decorative item.

Choctes weren’t pricey, yet their significance was ambiguous.

Everyone was aware of Essence’s affection for Kaiden.

Ellie peeked at the choctes. They were the renowned La Maison du Choct, often dubbed the Hermes of choctes.

Ellie had longed to try them but never found the time.

Just as Kaiden was about to offer the choctes to everyone, he noticed Ellie’s eyes sparkling at them, much like a mouse eyeing cheese.

“Do you want this?” Kaiden asked Ellie.

“Are you really offering it to me?” Ellie eyed him skeptically. “Remember, Miss Robbins gave this to you.”
