Rift 145

    (Scarlett’s POV)

I’m stunned, caught off guard by his sudden confession.

In the three years we’ve been married, Jasper never said ‘I love you, to me. Never. But I always believed he did because of how he took care of me in the days before our marriage.

    But after Virginia…

His hand slides up my back. His chest rises against mine. I feel his relief, his warmth. The way his whole body exhales just from holding me.

This is too close, too intimate to be okay.

I push on his shoulders, suddenly anxious to get free, to get away from him. <fn43c3> The source of th?s content is FindN()vel</fn43c3>

Jasper senses my intention, and loosens his hold. I release a sigh of relief and quickly step away from him, wary.

    “Letty?”

I raise my head and find him staring at me in confusion.

    “What’s wrong?”

    “I…”

Right at that moment, a knockes from the door. I hurry over and unlock it, needing the distraction to chase away the emotions threatening to swallow me whole.

    “Mama?”

Lily stands at the door, peering through the gap at her daddy sitting on the bed. “Is it my turn yet?”

Only then do I remember… I haven’t gotten the chance to brief Jasper on her existence.

Dr. Martin walks in behind Lily then, and the worried expression on his face makes my heart

    clench.

“Mrs. ke, I need you to step outside for a moment.”

I nce at Jasper then the doctor. Giving ir a look, I watch her take Lily away, before stepping outside.

“Dr. Martin, is Jasper going to be okay?”

He shakes his head. “Hard to say. The amnesia is a result of the head injury, but his post–traumatic stress disorder is the greater concern right now.”

“Post–traumatic stress? What do you mean?” I ask, my voice barely a thread.

“He is highly agitated and easily overwhelmed. Medically speaking, he is in a state of high rm. We believe this is a direct result of the trauma. However…”

He pauses, ncing at Jasper’s room. “Since your arrival, we observed his vital signs are better. His agitation decreased when he saw you. It’s a remarkable, if emotionallyplex, psychological defense mechanism.”

I turn back to Jasper. He is watching me, his eyes soft with affection. He smiles when our eyes meet, and for a second, my heart skips a beat.

I quickly withdraw my gaze, focusing back on Dr. Martin. “But he will get better, right?”

Right now, that’s my only concern. For him to get better, so I can stop drowning in guilt.

“Again, it’s hard to say. The patient has been calling for you since he woke up, asking where you are, if you’re okay or not. We had to sedate him twice because he was trying to get out of bed to look for you. For faster recovery, we suggest you stay in his sight.”

Dr. Martin goes on to list the precautions and measures to watch out for, but the words barely register in my ears.

    Stay in his sight.

Stay in his sight. What does that mean? Does this mean I have to be around Jasper until he recovers his memory.

But memory loss is aplicated case. Even the doctors can’t determine when a patient will get back their memories, what memory triggers will help them recover or make their health

    worsen.

So it could take weeks, months, or even years for him to recover his memories.

I…I can’t possibly y the role of his wife until then.

“This is ridiculous!” Virginia pops up then. “Why should she stay in his sight, when she no longer even has anything to do with him?”

    “I…I thought she’s Mrs. ke?”

“Ex Mrs. ke. Soon to be Mrs. Dorian Cross.” Virginia sneers, and the atmosphere suddenly

“Well, whatever your rtionship, I need to stress Mr. ke’s mental state is not in a condition to process shocking information right now. It’s important you don’t contradict his memories. His brain needs time to heal. Shocking him with information he can’t process could aggravate his condition.”

Virginia recoils, her face twisting into a mask of pure, impotent hatred. The fury is so raw, so intense, it vibrates in the air.

She looks at me, and I see the absolute revulsion in her eyes.

She doesn’t just hate me. She loathes my very presence.

“Virginia, the doctor has made it clear. Jasper’s health is the priority.” ir steps forward, her gaze soft butmanding.

She turns to me. “Scarlett, would you be willing to stay with him? I know it’splicated with your engagement and everything, but…”

I look through the window at Jasper, who’s staring at the door, waiting for me toe back. In his mind, I’m still his wife. Still the woman he loves, still the person he trusted above everyone else.

“I’ll stay,” I hear myself say. “Until he’s stable.

“It’s decided then. Scarlett will take care of Jasper. Until he recovers, we will coordinate with

    her.”

    “But…”

“No but.” James says, ying a heavy hand on her shoulder. His tone is low, but stern. “We’ll follow the doctor’s instructions. Scarlett will take care of Jasper.”

Virginia stands there, trembling, unable to fight thebined authority of the doctor and the Stones.

She finally turns, not to leave, but to stalk over to a chair in the corner of the room, sinking into it with her arms crossed, a silent, venomous guard.

    “Virginia-” I begin.

“I know what you’re going to say. That this is temporary. That when his memoryes back, he’ll remember that he loves me, not you<i>.</i>” She sneers, smoothing down her skirt. “But right now, in this moment, you’re the only one who can help him, right?”

This reality must be tearing her apart. I can see how much she wants to be the one Jasper needs, the one who canfort him.

“I’m sorry,” I tell her, and I mean it.

“Sure you are.” She spits, venom in her eyes. “But believe me when I say this isn’t over.”

I sigh, and walk back into room 314.

When I enter, I find Jasper staring at Lily, who is standing at the door, staring back at him in

    tears.

    My heart clenches.

I go to her, gathering her in my arms.

    “Mama…?” she whispers, clutching me.

    “Yes, baby. What’s wrong?”

“Does daddy not love me anymore?”

I pull back, shocked. “Why would you say that?”

“Daddy…he just stared at me. He didn’t call me his baby girl when he saw me.’

“Daddy is sick, remember? He’s not yet recovered.” I whisper, ignoring Jasper’s probing gaze as I lead her out of the room.

    “So daddy still loves me?”

“Yes, baby. You know how much daddy loves you. He doesn’t want to infect you with his sickness, that’s why he didn’t say anything.” Watching ir take her away, I brace myself, before returning to the room again.

Jasper is staring at the door, his gaze pensive.

When he sees me, “Letty,” he breathes.

I approach the bed slowly, my heart hammering against my ribs. Jasper looks so much better than he did a while ago. His eyes are open and alert, though there’s confusion in them.

He extends his hand, waiting. I hesitate for a second, recalling the earlier intimacy.

My stomach flutters, heat ming my cheeks.

Before I can return to my senses, Jasper grabs my wrist and pulls me to his side.

I settle on the bed carefully, mindful of the IV line. He inhales my scent again, his fingers closing around mine with desperate strength.

I feel the tension leaving his body, the wild pounding of his heart steadying behind me.

I’m just about to rx in his hold, when he suddenly asks the dreaded question. “Letty, who was that girl?”
