He removed his mask and let out a quiet breath. “Mr. Osborne was already in poor condition. This trauma has made things much worse. His chances of recovery are very low. You should both be prepared for that.”
Dawn felt her chest tighten, the bad feeling growing heavier. “Isn’t there anything else you can do to save him?”
“There used to be a 20% chance. Now…”
The doctor shook his head apologetically.
He didn’t say the rest, but it was obvious. Austin’s cancer hadpletely worsened, with no way to reverse it.
Dawn staggered, her thoughts going empty.
Ethan quickly caught her and held her close. “Dawn…”
No one could ept that kind of news easily.
Austin was the one who raised her. To her, he was no different from a father.
“I thought about so many oues, but cancer never crossed my mind. Why would this happen?”
Her voice sounded distant and hollow, filled with panic she couldn’t exin. She didn’t even know how she was supposed to walk in and face him.
No one answered. The air felt cold and heavy, pressing down on them.
Ethan gently patted her back, slow and quiet.
Sometimes, silence offered afort that words never could.
After a long time, a nurse pushed Austin into a regr ward. Dawn and Ethan followed behind.
Right as they reached the door, Ethan’s phone lit up.
He checked it, his brow tightening.
“Did somethinge up? If you need to go, just go. I’ll stay. If anything happens, I’ll call you.”
Ethan hesitated. “But you’ll be alone…”
“I’ll be fine.”
Dawn sniffed. “I’m not a little kid. I can handle it.”
With his heart aching, Ethan held her face, then pulled her into a hug. His tone softened. “Don’t be too sad. We’ll stay with him as long as we can. Do what we’re able to do and leave the rest to fate. That’s what he’d want.”
Dawn’sshes fluttered. “Okay.”

After watching Ethan leave, she turned and entered the ward.
The man on the bed was still asleep. His pale face looked gentler than when he was awake.
The longer she stared at him, the harder it was to hold back her tears..
Maybe he sensed it. His fingers twitched.
Austin slowly opened his eyes, his voice hoarse. “Why am I waking up to find you crying, hmm?”
Dawn quickly wiped her face. “What are you talking about? You’re imagining things.”
She stepped closer. “How are you feeling?”
“Not too bad.”
He blended into the white sheets, looking almost colorless. Only his eyes stayed clear.
Compared to how distant he used to be, he seemed much softer now..
He looked at her and gave a faint smile.
“Worried again?”

Dawn pursed her lips, stayed silent for a moment, and then muttered, “Austin, are you stupid or what? Sydney never had good intentions. You knew that. So why…”
“Dawn.” Austin interrupted her.
With his injuries, his voice was rough and slow.
“In a way, Sydney isn’tpletely wrong. I do carry responsibility for how she ended up like this. If I hadn’t spoiled her back then, maybe she wouldn’t have grown so obsessed.”
His eyes drifted, full of distant memories.
It was like he could still see the day they first met.
Sydney could have lived a good life,
“How is that your fault?”
Dawn frowned, clearly unconvinced. “She was already an adult when she met you. Didn’t you tell me that yourself? Being an adult means taking responsibility for your choices. If she lets greed twist her mind, then everything that follows is on her.”
The more she spoke, the colder her gaze became.
Sydney had hurt too many people. Dawn would never forgive her.
Seeing the anger in her eyes, Austin frowned. After a pause, he raised his hand and gently ced it on her arm.
That small touch pulled her back from the edge.
She blinked, a little stunned.

“Uncle Austin…”
“Dawn.”
He studied her quietly, then sighed softly. “Some lines are easy to cross, but once you do, it’s hard to go back to who you were before.”
She felt wronged. None of that should have been on him.
But if she acted on her darkest thoughts, she’d be no different from Sydney.
Dawn lowered her head and said nothing.
She couldn’t deny it. For just a moment, something dark had crossed her mind.
No matter the past or present, Sydney had done terrible things.
But this time, what she’d done wasn’t enough to lock her away forever.
