A gust of wind drifted in through the window, carrying a damp, salty smell.
Dawn had finished washing up, but she was wide awake.
Since the afternoon, her eyelid had been twitching nonstop. She could not shake the feeling that something was about to happen.
Just as she changed clothes and was about to go out for a walk, a sharp, urgent ring of the doorbell echoed outside.
Her chest tightened. She immediately picked up her phone and dialed Ethan.
The moment she opened the door, a swarm of bodyguards in ck suits poured in, flooding the room without restraint.

He smiled at her and picked up a small cat figurine nearby, turning it in his palm. “I just wanted to have a chat with Ms. Porter. What, are you not interested?”
Dawn let out a coldugh and swept her gaze across the room full of bodyguards.
“You break into a woman’s room in the middle of the night with this many people, and you call that chatting?”
“So what?” Christian nced around, looking almost sincere. “I was worried that if I came alone, Ms. Porter might not enjoy the
conversation.”
Dawn pressed her lips together and said nothing.
“Just pretend they’re not here.”
Christian patted the seat beside him lightly. He was smiling, but there was something deeply unsettling about it. “Come on, Ms.
Porter. Sit.”
Dawn looked at him coldly. After a brief hesitation, she walked over and sat down.
She did not know whether Ethan had answered the call, or whether he woulde at all.
Judging by Christian’s attitude, he had probably noticed something already.
So the only option was to stall.

As soon as she finished speaking, one of the bodyguards scowled. “Watch your tone when you talk to Mr. Hoffman.”

“No, no. Of course not.”
Christian turned and pretended to scold the bodyguard. “Where are your manners?! Apologize to Ms. Porter.”
The bodyguard looked unconvinced, but still nodded stiffly.
“Ms. Porter, the people under meck discipline. Don’t take it personally. Your time is valuable, so let’s just chat briefly and let you rest sooner,” Christian continued smoothly.
After the polite talk, he narrowed his eyes at her. “Ms. Porter changed clothes. Were you nning to go out?”
“I wanted to take a walk downstairs,” Dawn said with a faint, teasing smile. “Mr. Hoffman isn’t nning to control that too, is he?”
“Of course not.” Christian rubbed the figurine in his hand, his gaze dark and unreadable. After a long pause, he said, “I came tonight because there’s something I wanted to confirm with you.”
“What is it?”
“You and Roxanne went to the factory this afternoon. What were you doing there?”
Silence fell.
For two seconds, Dawn felt her heart drop.

“So you’re saying you went there purely to look at Stonewarden Group’s old materials?”
“What else would it be for?” Dawn leaned back, looking rxed and unbothered. “Honestly, Mr. Hoffman, even though we’re about to work together, the truth is…”
