Chapter 3
The hospital hallway was packed with Ryan’s teammates, all red eyed and ring at me with barely contained fury. Some turned away to punch
walls rather than look at me.
I walked past them with steady steps into the hospital room. Ryany ghostly pale against the white sheets, but managed a reassuring smile when he saw me.
“Hey, don’t look so scared. I’m fine–just caught a bullet, no big deal. I’ll be back on my feet soon.”
He reached out trying to take my hand, but I stepped back.
Officer Diego couldn’t contain himself any longer, his tone vicious: “Just sign the damn forms already! If we don’t get him into surgery soon, Detective Rodriguez could die.”
I gave him a cold nce and pulled out the divorce papers from my bag.
“I’m not signing any medical consent. If you want to stay alive, sign this divorce agreement and make your parents your primary emergency
contacts.”
“You-!”
Diego’s temple veins bulged as he lunged forward, looking ready to tear me apart before other officers held him back.
I swept my gaze over their varying expressions of disgust. Using my own husband’s life to threaten him into divorce–they’d probably never seen a more vicious woman.
Ryan’s expression shifted through multiple emotions before he finally closed his eyes,
“All this because I spent one night watching over Lily?”
Under the weight of looks that could kill, I answered tly.
“Yes. Because you spentst night with Lily Sinir.”
Suddenly someone grabbed my shirt cor from behind, yanking me backward.
When I saw who it was, Ryan tried desperately to sit up before copsing back in pain.
“Lily, don’t touch her.”
voice hoarse.
Lily Sinir was covered in dried blood, her previously swollen belly now deted, looking unnaturally weak.
“If you hate me, I’ll disappear from your life forever. But Ryan’s injury can’t wait–without surgery he’ll lose his leg.”
“I already owe Ryan everything. If he bes disabled because of me, I’ll never forgive myself.”
A short–haired woman helped the sobbing Lily to her feet, eyes zing as she stared at me.
I recognized her–Officer Diana, the only woman on Ryan’s team.
“Why the hell did Detective Rodriguez marry such a selfish, stupid bitch? He’s out there risking his life for strangers and all you care about is your petty rtionship drama.”
“Even if he WAS cheating, it’d be because you drove him to it!”
That’s when I learned the truth: if Ryan hadn’t been protecting Lily’s unborn baby, he could’ve easily avoided that bullet.
I let out a bitterugh and whirled on Ryan.

“You told me you’d handed Lily duty off to other officers. So why were you with her today?”
“Ryan, you’re so protective of Lily–is that baby actually yours?”
“Victoria!”
Ryan’s temple throbbed as his hand connected with my face in a sharp p, the force splitting my lip. I spat out blood expressionlessly.
“Ryan! How could you hit Victoria!” His parents rushed in just in time to see me bleeding, immediately shielding me.
Ryan was breathing hard, eyes wild. “She can scream at me, hit me, whatever. But she will NOT disrespect a fallen officer’s widow.”
His parents stared at me in shock as I lifted my chin defiantly.
“Hit a nerve, did I?”
“Running to Lily’s ce every night, staying until dawn–don’t tell me nothing happened.”
Lily’s sobs hitched for just a moment, her eyes flickering with something guilty before she wailed even louder, threatening to “die with the baby.”
The room erupted in chaos. If Ryan’s parents hadn’t been protecting me, countless fists would’ve been flying.
But I didn’t flinch, holding up the divorce papers and mming them against Ryan’s face.
“If you don’t sign these divorce papers right now, I cane up constitution can handle it.”
with plenty more scandalous rumors about you and Lily. Wonder if her delicate
“I’ve got all the time in the world to wait this out. Question is–can your hand?”
Ryan gritted his teeth but still wouldn’t budge. His parents frantically gathered up the scattered papers, tears streaming.
“You can’t get divorced, Victoria! We’ve seen how much Ryan loves you–divorce would kill him!”
The entire room was in chaos when Ryan finally spoke.
“I never betrayed you. This has to stay ssified for Lily’s protection, but I’ll tell you the truth.”
Despite everyone trying to stop him, Ryan said slowly: “Every time I went to check on Lily, I had three or four backup officers stationed around the area. Diana has all the duty rosters–you want to see them?”
“Look at the records, then drop this divorce bullshit.”
I snorted. “Why wouldn’t I want to see them?”
Diana’s grip on her bag tightened as she reluctantly pulled out a folder under Ryan’s intense stare.
Sure enough, the sheets were covered with countless names.
Ryan took the papers and was about to hand them to me when his face suddenly went ashen. Ignoring his injured arm, he sat up abruptly and frantically flipped through the duty roster.
Finally, his expression dark and unreadable as he looked around the room, he said in a hoarse voice:
