Anneliese''s foster father had died while saving Jonathan. Her foster motherter had an ident because of that, and the whole family fell apart.
The Fullbuster family had also hidden the truth about the fire. Even though Gerard didn''t end up in prison, his oue was still far too lenient. The Fullbuster family had protected the arsonist to some extent. On top of that, Elizabeth, who had caused all this trouble, had paid no price at all.
There was no way Anneliese could feel at ease about it.
Penelope felt ashamed, but she felt even more worried.
She was truly afraid this matter would affect the young couple''s rtionship.
"You didn''t know the truth back then. You don''t need to feel guilty or me yourself because of this."
Annelieseforted Penelope instead. She knew that Penelope had been overseas at the time. Derek had told Jonathan and Penelope that the fire had been an ident.
Anneliese wouldn''t me innocent people.
"You''re such a good child. Jonathan really didn''t know about this. You..."
Penelope didn''t finish her sentence before Anneliese gently patted her hand and smiled.
"Grandma, don''t worry. I don''t me Jonathan either. You don''t look well. You should rest."
Jonathan had helped her uncover the truth about the fire. Otherwise, Derek had handled it so cleanly that Anneliese could never have forced the truth out on her
own.
Besides, Jonathan had been one of the people hurt the most by that fire. He hadn''t done anything wrong.
Anneliese felt sorry for him more than anything else. She wouldn''t hold anything against him just because Derek had hidden the truth.
Seeing that Anneliese didn''t look forced at all and truly didn''t me Jonathan, Penelope finally let out a deep breath.
"Good, good. Derek really did something terrible this time. Anne, besides what he already said, you and your grandma can talk it over. If you have any other requests or ideas, feel free to share them. I''ll take care of it for you."
Anneliese smiled and nodded. She didn''t refuse. "Okay."
Only then did Penelope close her eyes and rest.
After Anneliese left Penelope''s bedroom, Elizabeth was no longer in the living room.
Anneliese looked at the empty living room. She suddenly thought of Ellie, who was alone upstairs. Her heart skipped.
What if Elizabeth had gone crazy and gone upstairs to look for Ellie?
Anneliese''s face changed. She quickly ran upstairs.
When she reached the door of her and Jonathan''s bedroom, she saw someone standing there.
It was Derek''s butler.
When he saw her rushing over, he seemed to know what she was worried about and smiled.
"Ms. Ellie is inside ying quietly. I just checked a moment ago. You don''t need to worry."
Anneliese knew that Jonathan must have told the butler to stand guard here.
Even if Elizabeth came up to look for Ellie, the butler could stop her.
Anneliese let out a breath of relief. She thanked the butler and then pushed the door open.
Ellie was sitting quietly at the small table, focused on her drawing. Anneliese walked over and knelt on the cushion beside the table. She leaned closer to look.
"You draw really well. Why didn''t you draw the face?"
Ellie had drawn three females of different heights. The smallest one was probably herself. The one on the right was wearing a fitted dress and ashaw. That should be Wendy The woman on the other side wore a blue dress, carried a small couch, and held a bouquet of flowers. She clearly looked like a young woman.
The drawing was detailed and neat. Only the young woman didn''t have a face.
Anneliese thought the faceless
woman might be herself. She
assumed Ellie had nned to draw
the facest. She was about to ask if
Ellie wanted help when she heard Ellie''s weak voice. ''
"That''s Mom."
Anneliese froze when Ellie suddenly spoke again. A flicker of happiness barely
surfaced before it was reced by a deep ache in her chest.
Ellie had never seen her mother. That was why she couldn''t imagine what her face
looked like. That was why she had left it nk.
Anneliese thought Elizabeth''s
outburst earlier must have been the
reason. Even though she had
covered Ellie''s ears quickly, Effie must have still heard something.
Anneliese leaned over and pulled Ellie into her arms.
"Ellie, do you miss your mom? I don''t know where your mom is right now, but I know this. Your mom loves you."
