Anneliese had originally hesitated over whether she should tell Jessica that Zane hade back-how he had gone to the Malone family to make things clear with Gianna, and how he had been searching everywhere for her. However, she decided not to mention any of it after seeing that Jessica didn''t ask even once, and even learning that Mary had sent people to kill her in Harborview.
With the Shayman family taking such a stance, Jessica couldn''t turn back. Hence, bringing up Zane would be meaningless anyway.
After hanging up, Anneliese let out a sigh. Then, she saw Jonathan walk out from the dressing room, having changed into loungewear.
"Did you get rid of that Shayman?"
Seeing that she wouldn''t even say Zane''s name, Jonathan knew something must have happened on Jessica''s end. After all, he could sense her resentment toward Zane was even deeper now.
As Jonathan thought about it, he sat beside her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders before replying, "I got him drunk and had him thrown out. What happened?"
Anneliese didn''t hide anything and told him about how Jessica had been followed and even nearly been run over.
Then, she looked up at him. "Is Zane''s mother really that unreasonable?" They had clearly reached an understanding before, yet now she was chasing Jessica all the way to Harborview. That was far too ruthless.
After hearing what Anneliese said, Jonathan frowned slightly. He pursed his lips together and said, "Wait a moment." Then, he took out his phone and called Zion. "Check Mrs. Shayman''s movements over the past week."
After Zion got into action, Jonathan hung up and looked at Anneliese.
Seeing his reaction, Anneliese realized something and asked, "Are you suspecting that the person who went to Jessica''s ward might not be Mrs. Shayman? And that the one trying to harm Jessica might not be her either?"
Jonathan gently brushed the crease between her brows and said, "Smart."
At that, Anneliese sat up abruptly from his arms. She grabbed his arm and said urgently, "Why make it soplicated? Do you have a photo of Mrs. Shayman? Send it to me right now, and I''ll forward it to Jessica to have her identify it."
"I don''t have a picture of her." Jonathan shook his head.
Anneliese held up her phone and asked, "Can we find one online?"
"Probably not. Mrs. Shayman keeps a low profile. Families like the Shaymans inevitably offend people, so they''re very careful about protecting their family members. Thus, not many photos would be shown publicly."
Anneliese frowned. "If that is so, howe you suspect that person wasn''t Mrs. Shayman?"
"The Shayman family doesn''t have many family members. Zane is only about three years older than me, and he''s already thirty. Mrs. Shayman has been nagging him to have family for years. Logically speaking, event she were dissatisfied with Jessica, she wouldn''t go so far as to eradicate the child in her womb. What''s more, the Shayman family''s principles are rtively upright. Even if they didn''t want the child to be born, they''d find a way through legal channels to force an abortion. Using a car to run someone down doesn''t fit the Shayman family at all."
Anneliese nodded. The Shayman family was rooted in the political industry, so suchwless behaviors really didn''t match their style. Besides, if the Shaymans were the ones behind this wouldn''t they fear, the bacsh if things went wrong and the scandal implicated the family''s reputation?
"If it wasn''t Mrs. Shayman..." As Anneliese followed this line of thought, a
hypocritical face shed before her eyes almost instantly.
She thought about Gianna''s biological mother, Pepper.
That woman was full of false benevolence, insidiously malicious in the same vein as her daughter.
Gianna had just caused Jessica to be hospitalized, and Mary appeared at the hospital the next moment. Anneliese felt that the news traveled far too quickly. In fact, Pepper was farmore likely to have heard about it.
As she thought about it, her eyes widened. She tightened her grip on Jonathan''s
hand as she eximed, "I think I know who it is!"
Jonathan smiled and raised an eyebrow as he looked at her.
"You thought of it too, didn''t you?" Anneliese asked.
Jonathan had indeed reached the same conclusion. He ruffled her hair and said, "Looks like Zion won''t need to work so hard on checking Mrs. Shayman. Today''s news should have photos of Pepper."
"Right, I''ll look for it now." Anneliese nodded and immediately unlocked her phone.
