He raised his hand and mped down on Zane''s wrist. "Isn''t my wife''s words clear enough?"
Zane was irritated and snarled. "Jonathan, are you still my friend?"
Hearing their argument escte, Anneliese turned around with a worried look on her face.
However, Jonathan gave her a reassuring look and said gently, "I''ll handle this. You should go and get some rest."
She nced at Zane once more.
She didn''t want to get entangled with him any further since there was no way she would tell him where Jessica had gone. She trusted that Jonathan would keep his word and wouldn''t reveal anything to Zane either.
Then, she nodded and turned to go upstairs.
Only then did Jonathan release Zane. He walked over to the bar, poured Zane a ss of wine, and slid it across the counter before speaking, "We are friends, but please don''t make things hard for me either."
Zane drank it in one gulp before mming it heavily back onto the counter. "That''s easy for you to say. It''s not your woman who went missing!"
Hearing his words, Jonathan smiled slightly and said, "I love and care for my wife. She also does the same to me. Hence, how could she ever disappear?"
"F*ck you!" Zane couldn''t help but curse under his breath. "Stop being a pain in the *ss now, Jonathan!"
Jonathan calmly poured himself a ss and topped up Zane''s ss as well.
Then, he clinked his ss against thetter andmented, "She is already gone. Isn''t it obvious as to what she is implying? Plus, you weren''t there when she needed you."
The only thing Jonathan could do now was drink a few more sses with Zane. After all, he didn''t want Zane to get Jessica back only for his own wife to run off instead.
Jessica was a fiery woman.
With Zane in his current state, if he really did find her and something went wrong, Jonathan was certain that Anneliese would skin him alive.
"Even if she wants to break up with me, she should have told me in the face. Things shouldn''t turn out like this." Zane clenched his fist, his voice rough and hoarse, as if scorched by the alcohol.
Seeing how agitated Zane was, Jonathan patted his shoulder and tried to calm him down. "Are you hearing yourself? If I didn''t know any better would have thought that you two had some earth-shattering romance. We didn''t even know Jessica was your girlfriend back then. Only now did you admit it after she left you. Just let it be."
His words stabbed straight into Zane''s heart. Zane opened his mouth but couldn''t
find anything to refute. After all, it was true-he hadn''t treated Jessica like a girlfriend before.
That was a fact.
However, that didn''t change the fact that Jessica was his. He''d only gone on a
business trip, yet Jonathan had teamed up with Anneliese to hide Jessica away from him.
Thus, he med it all on Jonathan.
Thinking about it, Zane grabbed Jonathan by the cor and said, "I refuse to let things end!"
Jonathan snorted and brushed his hand away. "Why bother? Didn''t you end things with your other exes on decent terms and even stay friends? Jessica is my sister-in-w. At the very least, she was with you once and doesn''t owe you anything. She almost ended up going to prison because of you—that''s bad enough.
"For the sake of our friendship, I advise you to let her go and stop making things difficult for her." As Jonathan spoke, he swirled the wine in hisss and continued, "Besides, you''re not nning to marry her anyway, so why do you want to look for her? Just to say goodbye in
person? Is that really so important?"
Zane tipped his head back and downed another ss. A faint flush of drunkenness crept onto his face, and his expression grew even more painful. He''s right. Why am I so determined to find Jessica?
He had never been the type to cling desperately to a woman.
Since Jessica didn''t want to see him anymore, he should have just let her go. Yet, just the thought of her vanishing—disappearing from his life—had left him feeling restless.
He thought that it must be because he was unwilling to ept the fact that she had left him while he was abroad, when everything was fine by then. Moreover, he had even been thinking about introducing her to his friends. This feeling of being dumped by force was unbearable, and that was why he couldn''t let it go.
Zane stared at Jonathan and said, "After Jessica left the police station that day, I couldn''t trace her whereabouts at all. Her information was even officially cancelled. This clearly means that she had changed her identity. Not only did she leave Oceaton, but she also went abroad, right?"
