I arrived at night in Ash Pack, but the gates had been shut. Still, I was not deterred. I was determined to see Varyn Ashmere this night whether he liked it or not.
I would take my own pound of flesh too for what he had done. Turning my own pack into a battlefield, using the wedding as a distraction.
I was a fool. I should have known better. He is a war strategist, and there are many things he can allow… but me marrying his sister was never one of them.
Setting my jaw, I banged hard at the gates until the guard rushed to open. He looked me over first before stepping aside, letting me in.
“I will see Varyn Ashmere,” I said coldly.
The guard bowed his head.
“Wait for him in the meeting hall.”
Grinding my teeth, I made my way there. The same hall where he and I had spoken the other night, when he promised me heaven if I gave him Apex’s secrets.
The silence in the pack grounds was suffocating, heavy with a kind of dread. Even though the true war had not yet begun, Kai was already dead. Not by another, but by Apex’s hand, and in my eyes, both Apex and Varyn killed him.
Kai was sent off yesterday. I had watched with tears, and nothing could break me more. Nothing except the cold realization crawling into me now.
Apex had once told me Kai would die young, that his death was inevitable. He was right. Realizing that truth, that cursed prophecy, made me realize what was at stake. He truly was cursed. He must be removed from this empire before he destroys it.
I was still pacing, simmering in anger, when footsteps finally came. The door opened and he appeared. Varyn Ashmere.
For a moment, he stood framed in the doorway, eyes steady on me. Not surprised, not startled. As though he had already anticipated I woulde. The way his calmness cut into me sent a chill down my spine.
“Wee,” he said softly, walking toward his chair.

“You set me up. You lied to me! You promised me Zeph, but what did you do? You broke your word…”
“Keep your voice down,” he cut me off, firm and sharp. The look in his eyes was venomous. “I did not lie to you. If you recall, word for word, I only promised to send out the invitations if you gave me Apex’s secrets. And I kept that promise. Did I not send out the wedding invitations cards?”
My heart sank. He had twisted it. My shoulders sagged with the realization that I had been yed.
“You killed my beta. Because of your war with Apex, Kai is dead!”
you should “Trust me he was a sacrifice for the greater good,” Varyn said smoothly. “And prepare yourself. More will die. We are going to war. All werewolves against the Lycans. Won’t you join us? Perhaps then you can take your revenge properly. I heard it was Apex who drove the spear through your beta’s heart. If Kai hadn’t stepped out of your pack that night, it might have been you lying dead. You should be grateful.”
A chill swept down my spine. Slowly, I sat down, realizing we were already caught in a tide of blood.
“What are you talking about… war?” I asked, voice low.
He only shrugged, as if civilians‘ lives meant nothing.
“Apex has no army.”
I scowled.
“You think him weak? You’ve seen him fight. You know how he swings his des. You think your kin can hold him off?”
He gave me a faint smile.
“The first and hardest step has been taken. Gaxib gave us the key to Apex’s weakness. His tower has fallen. He caught his reflection. And now he has shut his gates. That means he cannot defend his kingdom from attack.”
Still, I shook my <fn0036> The rightful source is find?novel</fn0036>
head.
“You don’t just walk into hisnd blind. He is cursed. He is dangerous. We cannot underestimate him.”

For a moment, Varyn studied me in silence. Then he leaned back into his chair and turned toward the entrance.
“Come in, love.”
At that, Dessyn, Zephyrine’s best friend, walked in. She went to Varyn without hesitation. He pulled her into hisp, brushing her hair back with a tender touch, then kissed her before my
eyes.
“So, she’s gone, yes?” he asked softly.
Dessyn nodded, and Varyn turned to me.
“You heard her. Zephyr has gone to the Lycan Kingdom. I sent Dessyn earlier to nt the thought in her head. Now she will walk straight to Apex. Whatever state he’s in, she will bring word back to Dessyn and her whispers wille to my own ears. That is how we’ll know when to strike.”
I went still, shocked at the cunning of the n. My eyes flicked to Dessyn in disbelief. How easily she betrayed her dearest friend.
Perhaps Varyn’s bed was too sweet for her to resist. And yet, what did that say about Zeph herself? Apex killed her father, and still she ran to him. His cock must be sweeter than honey.
And me? I had not even tasted her, yet I was losing my mind over her.
“You will have her if Apex dies,” Varyn’s voice cut into my thoughts. My eyes shot to him.
“No games this time,” he said with quiet finality. “If Apex dies, Zephyr is yours. I will hand her over myself. What do you say?”
Silence hung between us like smoke, thick and poisonous. But silence was enough. We stared at one another until the truth was sealed.
We had an ord.
