My eyes went blood red: “She’s not even six years old! How could you give a kid Ambien? I thought you were just crazy, but you’re straight–up evil!”
Before Kira could say anything, I was already scooping up Pearl and running for the car: “We need to get her to the ER,
now!”
Kira grabbed Harrison’s hand, tears streaming:
“Baby, I just wanted her to sleep better…”
But this time Harrison didn’t even look at her. He peeled out, leaving her in the dust.
Thank God we got to the hospital fast enough.
They pumped Pearl’s stomach and she was out of danger.
She’d need to stay for observation though.
Looking at Pearl’s pale face, Harrison’s dark circles got even worse.
He apologized profusely and begged me to stay at the hospital with her.
“Don’t worry, I’ll have a serious talk with Kira.”
“The kid’s innocent. Please don’t take out the adults‘ mess on Pearl.”
Harrison was generous as always–he transferred another hundred grand.
I got pumped up instantly:
“Mr. Harrison, don’t worry! I’ll take care of Pearl like she’s my own daughter!”
I actually had a few peaceful days at the hospital.
Lily called to gossip:
“Harrison and Kira made up again. Heard Harrison was ready to file for divorce, but Kira threatened to off herself, so no dice.”
“What the hell did Kira do to snap Harrison out of his lovesick haze?”
I told Lily about the Ambien incident.
Lilyunched into another colorful tirade about Kira’s family tree.

Chapter 3
“Just watch yourself. I heard the Harrisons are throwing some big party–supposedly for Pearl’s sixth birthday, but really to announce to high society that Mrs. Harrison’s back.”
“And get this–Kira’s the one nning it.”
I figured a therapist like me wouldn’t be invited to some fancy Harrison party, so whatever.
But the day of the party, Pearl wouldn’t let go of my hand.
She’d always depended on me, and after being in the hospital at her most vulnerable with me by her side 24/7…
“Come with us, Evelyn.” Harrison said it like it was settled.
Kira was holding Harrison’s other hand, looking like she wanted to murder me, but she didn’t start shit like before.
The party was all clinking sses and fake smiles.
I spotted Lily and went over with Pearl in my arms:
“Looks like Harrison threatening divorce actually made Kira chill out a bit…”
Before I could finish that sentence, Lily and I got jumped.
Three or four guys in server uniforms whipped out steak knives from under tables, grabbed us, and pressed the des to our throats.
Seriously? I’m holding a kid here!
Luckily Pearl wasn’t scared–just staring around with those big round eyes.
Everyone started screaming and running.
Then I heard Kira’s voice, all breathy and dramatic:
“Honey, save me!”
Wait, she got grabbed too?
While everyone else was stampeding toward the exits, Harrison pushed through the crowd, voice steady:
“What do you want? Name it–cash, cars, helicopter?”
“Just let them go and it’s yours. Don’t hurt them!”
The lead guy started cackling:
“Never thought the almighty Mr. Harrison would be begging me!”
“Too bad I don’t want your money. I want your precious woman dead!”

Chapter 3
“Pick one of the three–she lives, the other two die…”
That made me, Lily, and Harrison all frown.
Only Kira lost her shit: “Honey, save me!”
“You promised you’d protect me forever!”
Lily was like: “Excuse me, if you want Harrison’s most beloved woman, why the hell did you grab ME?!”
The guy sneered: “Everyone knows you and Evelyn are recements. So what’s it gonna be–will our Mr. Harrison pick his first love or one of his stand–ins?”
“This should be interesting…”
Hearing that familiar recement bullshit, we all automatically looked at Kira.
I mean, she’s literally the only person who thinks Lily and I are stand–ins.
Under three sets of eyes, Kira looked at Harrison all teary: “Baby, you don’t trust me either?”
Harrison’s mouth twitched, but before he could speak, the knife sliced across my cheek:
“Shut the hell up! Mr. Harrison, choose now!”
My face was on fire, blood dripping instantly.
The guy moved his knife to Lily’s face: “Take any longer and this pretty girl gets a makeover too.”
Lily went ballistic with her usual creative cursing, then threatened:
“Harrison, if anything happens to me or Evelyn, I’ll bankrupt your ass!”
Pearl finally realized something was wrong and started wailing in my arms.
Kira was still blubbering: “Honey, save me!”
The leader roared: “Everyone shut up! Harrison, you got five seconds.”
“Five.”
“Four.”
“Three.”
“Two.”
“One.”

“Wait!” Harrison shouted. “I choose…”
