Forget the 33

    Chapter 1

I was softly reading a bedtime story to their autistic daughter when the CEO’s first love came crashing through the

    door.

Her eyes ping–ponged between us before she marched straight over.

Just when I thought she was gonna scoop up her kid, she straight–up smacked me across the face.

“You homewrecking bitch! I bounce for a couple years and you just swoop in–banging my husband, jacking my daughter!”

“Think you can be my stand–in just ‘cause you look kinda like me? Think you can steal my whole damn life!”

I’m clutching my burning cheek like–what the actual hell?

    Stand–in? Me?

Isn’t my job literally just being the therapist Mr. Harrison hired for his autistic kid?

The sharp p scared the hell out of little Pearl, who’d almost been asleep. She burst into tears with a loud wail.

My professional instincts kicked in–no time to argue with this crazy woman. I immediately scooped Pearl into my arms, whispering softly to calm her down.

Pearl was diagnosed with autism from birth. She doesn’t rely on anyone, doesn’t care about anyone–except when I hold her, she actually settles down.

That’s why Mr. Harrison pays me big bucks to be her full–time caregiver.

Under my gentlefort, Pearl gradually calmed down.

But the woman I’d been ignoring? She was pissed. She lunged forward, trying to grab Pearl from my arms.

“I carried you for nine months! How can you depend on some knockoff when I’m your real mom!”

She was totally losing it, practically feral.

Autistic kids are way more sensitive than regr kids, and Pearl’s emotions started spiraling again.

    Now I was actually mad.

Even if this woman really was Pearl’s mom–Harrison’s runaway first love–I wasn’t having it.

I dodged her grabby hands while holding Pearl, immediately hitting the room’s panic button.

Within seconds, the butler and Mr. Harrison came running.

“Mr. Harrison, someone’s trying to hurt Pearl,” I called out loudly.

Harrison’s protective dad mode activated instantly. He rushed over to shield Pearl.

But when he saw who it was, his eyes went red and his voice cracked.

“Kira… you finally decided toe back…”

Harrison’s hands were literally shaking as he tried to bring Pearl over to Kira, wanting her to hold their kid.

But Kira didn’t even reach out. She just turned away looking all wounded.

“I don’t have a daughter who turns on her own family like this.”

“And you! When you proposed, you swore you’d only love me forever!”

“I’m gone for six measly years… and you rece me with some other woman who looks just like me!”

Harrison nced uncertainly between Kira and me.

Honestly had no clue what we had inmon besides, you know, two eyes, a nose, and a mouth.

“You’re still looking at her! Since you’re picking her right in front of me, I’m out!”

Kira’s eyes filled with tears as she bolted for the door.

Harrison panicked. He shoved Pearl back into my arms and chased after her.

From outside, I could hear Harrison exining:

“Babe, Evelyn’s just the nanny I hired to take care of our kid.”

“She’s not some recement! Now that you’re back, can we just be a family again?”

    “Babe…”

After half an hour, Harrison led Kira back in by the hand.

Kira smirked at me triumphantly. “You’re fired!”

Before I could even respond, Harrison jumped in:

“Babe, didn’t I just exin this to you? Our daughter can’t function without her.”

Kira’s face did aplete 180, tears instantly welling up.

“Harrison, I’m not mad at you. I mean, I was the one who ran off to study abroad, leaving you and our kid. I get why

    you found a recement.”

“But I’m back now. Our daughter needs me, and so do you…”

    The waterworks started flowing.

    Harrison was torn.

He knew damn well Pearl couldn’t handle being without me, but he couldn’t lose Kira either.

After a beat, he turned to me:

“Evelyn, take the night off. You can head home.”

I pointed to my swollen cheek. “Your wife did this. Worker’sp.”

Harrison tapped his phone a few times.

I checked mine and–holy shit. Dude just bought me a whole apartment in the most expensive part of town.

I immediately handed Pearl over to Harrison and bowed respectfully.

    “Yes, sir.”

As I walked out, Kira stood there with her hands on her hips like she’d just won the Super Bowl, chin up and

    everything.

I was too busy thinking about my new apartment to care.

Besides, after taking care of Pearl for so long, I hadn’t had a proper break in forever.

However, this middle of the night, and I was dead to the world in bed when my phone started ringing.
