I was d Tiffany wasn’t yet back from Kate’s ce. I looked like hell with dark circles around my red eyes, the same clothes I’d worn at the party and a faint throbbing headache that only added to my troubled state. I looked like a zombie, and not the one that went around moaning for brains. I’d been tossing and turning in bed for hours, constantly thinking about Harper and Maddox fucking like there was no tomorrow.
She’d been so into it even when fucked hard. She wanted it. She’d sounded so damn sexy but instead of enjoying it, I hated every bit of it. Because it wasn’t me she was begging for more.
The way he got excited when he needed to return upstairs because she was fucking ready, the way I left her car parked in his front yard, it all burned my chest.
Even with the sunlight filtering through the curtains, I stared at the ceiling, hoping that sleep woulde if I forced it hard enough but the harder I tried to shut out any fucking images of them, the clearer it became and I couldn’t take it anymore.
It was 11 in the morning and I needed to know where she was. I just needed to make sure Maddox still didn’t have her in his bed.
Pacing right near the bed, I dialed her number before I could talk myself out of it.
“Hey!” she said from the other end of the line, her voice soft and casual.
Trying to sound natural, I said, “Hey, I just thought I’d check on you. The party was wild and you drank too much. Any hangover?”
“I’m good. What about you?”
“You know I don’t get drunk easily.”
“Yeah, but the way Maddox described it when he came back upstairs was crazy.”
I clenched my jaw at the mention of his name. “Where are you?”
“I’m home now.”
I was so relieved that I sat down on the bed, but it still didn’t erase the fact that she had been with Maddox all night.
“Did you really have to end up with himst night?” I asked before I could stop myself.
She sighed. “Please don’t start.”
“I’m only asking because of how you barely spoke to him for the past-”
“We talked about everything, right after you went back inside. We’re good now.”
“So you just ignored the fact that he was fucking Kate and-”
“The thing with Kate is…none of my business. Like I said, we’re good now.”

I feared that if I dragged out that conversation, she would only catch on to what else was going on with me. Maddox was leaving but I was still in town. That was all I needed to turn things around.
“Let’s do something this afternoon.”
“Uh…really?” she asked like she now had a smile stered on her face.
“Yeah, just you and me. We haven’t been out in years.”
“Oh…I uh…”
I smirked in satisfaction. She could fuck Maddox if she wanted for a whole month straight, but when it came down to who really made her wish for more, it definitely wasn’t him.
“I can’t,” she said. “I have so much work to do today. I haven’t even checked my work emails yet.”
“Then we can do it any day you feel like it. I’ll wait.”
She giggled like a teenager. “How’s this Friday?”
“Perfect and don’t worry about Tiffany. I’ll handle that part. Where do you want us to go?”
“You–you’re asking me?”
“Yeah, anything you want.”
All it took was making her feel special and she was back to that girl I always knew. With or without Maddox, I realized it was that easy. I just needed to y my cards right.
As she began to tell me everything she had in mind, I heard the sound of an engine outside, so I looked outside the window and spotted Tiffany’s car.
It was still going to take her a while to get to the bedroom, so I began to take off my clothes while still on the phone with Harper.
I even stepped into the shower as soon as the call ended.
Though freshening up wasn’t going to get rid of my dark circles and red eyes, it was still going to make a difference.
It took her so long to get to the bedroom that I even stepped out of the shower while in a robe.
Finally, the door creaked open and she walked in with bare feet, her heels in one hand while she had her purse in the other hand. What stood out the most was the fact that she was wearing a different dress.
“You look awful,” she said, a little grumpy.
“Someone’s in a bad mood.” I kissed her on the lips.

“I’ve had a very rough night. Kate kept throwing up and even did it on my dress. I took this one from her closet and it costs way less.”
“Let me guess, there’s more?” I wrapped my arms around her.
“Kate and I had discussed the game I was going to make the guests y at the party. She’s the one who opened her mouth and told Maddox about it. She was already so drunk when she did it. She fucking ruined everything.”
“I don’t understand why you even say this in front of me when you know Harper and I are close.”
She pulled away to face the mirror, twisting her face in anger. “I only tolerated her all these years because she was your friend. Now, she’s being a slut in my brother’s life, not that I give a shit anymore.”
“I see you’re still mad about what he said.”
“I told mom and dad. They’ll talk to both of us, but it makes no difference to me.”
“Does that mean this can finally end? No more going after Harper since you no longer care about who your brother sleeps with? Besides, he’s leaving her behind. That means she’ll be all alone.”
She scoffed. “So what? I know she fucked himst night. I’m not just going to-”
“That’s enough. Not another word about this.” My voice was low butmanding.
“But-”
“I’m not going to say it a second time.”
She sneered. “Now you openly defend her?”
“I’m just tired of all this. Be the girl I married, not this one, who’s constantly plotting her revenge. I can’t stand
it.”
“You know what? You’re right.” She smiled sweetly, reaching for my hand.
My eyes narrowed suspiciously.
She chuckled. “Why do you look like you don’t believe me? I hate it when you look at me like I disgust you. It’s the same way you looked at me when that waitress almost messed up my dress during our honeymoon. Fine, no more revenge. I shouldn’t be wasting my energy on that loser.”
“You mean that?” My head tilted.
She threw her arms around my neck. “I mean every word. I promise.”
I hugged her tightly and kissed her forehead, but I didn’t know if I could trust her to keep that promise. She had said exactly what I wanted to hear, so why did that bother me?
