The panic in Kate’s voice and bodynguage made me take out my phone to find out what all the panic was about. Harper had posted a longment..
“Man, I used to hate those photos,” her reply started, “Who would want that girl? Turns out…me. I used to wonder why some people didn’t notice me, but I’m d they didn’t. It gave me space to be who I am today. The girl in those photos isn’t someone Iugh at, she’s someone I thank.”
She also posted her simple skincare routine, how she cares for her hair and tagged her friends, E and Zoey to show them some love.
I paused, my thumb hovering over the screen to read Harper’s reply over and over again. It reminded me of that evening when I saw her again at Grayson and Tiffany’s engagement party. I tried to mock her but she knew how to stand up for herself. It was for this reason that I expected nothing less in that situation with the post. I just didn’t realize it would be that satisfying.
What made it even better were the replies under Harper’sment.
“Wait, what moisturizer do you use?”
“Can you please do a full routine video?”
“OMG I’m definitely following for more tips!”
“You’ve made me realize we need to focus on someone’s glow–up and not tear them down.”
Even the friends Harper had tagged were now in thements.
There were so many replies under herment that I couldn’t read any more, but the post was now getting more love than hate because the inte that mocked her a few hours ago switched sides.
Just as I smirked at how she turned the tables, Tiffany let out an annoying high–pitched scream and I looked over, that already being the reaction I expected.
She ced a hand on her hip with a sharp breath. “That bitch really thinks this makes her special?”
“It’s crazy how everyone is now on her side,” Kate chimed in.
“Shut the fuck up, Kate!” Tiffany hissed. “This little glow–up doesn’t erase what Harper used to be. I’m going to destroy her for this. You’ll see!”
There wasn’t a single part of me that felt bad for my sister. I even leaned against the wall just to watch the
show.
Kate was there, trying to give her opinion, but what got my attention more was Grayson’s silence. He stood beside Tiffany with his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his eyes glued to the floor. He had a lot to say when Margot and Kate made all thosements about Harper. But now that his wife had openly sworn revenge on Harper, he waspletely silent.

It was all so pathetic that I didn’t want to be there anymore. I moved away from the wall and began to make my way to the front door.
“Let’s go,” I said to Kate.
She was just about to rush to me when Grayson’s voice cut through the air.
“Wait.”
I paused, but didn’t turn around.
“Can we talk outside?”
Tiffany was too focused on the post about Harper to even ask what Grayson had to talk to me about.
I stepped outside and left the door behind me open so he could follow.
I was right by the steps, but he walked past me.
“I thought you wanted to talk.” My forehead creased.
“Not over there.”
I sighed, following him all the way to the backyard. “What’s this about?”
“When are you leaving town?” he asked bluntly.
I shook my head lightly. “I should have known. Why-”
“Just answer the question.”
“I don’t know. Any problem?”
“The sooner you leave, the better. Harper told me you two are just having a good time but I know her. I don’t want to see her catching feelings for someone like you.”
I scoffed. “Is that what you’re really worried about?”
“Meaning?”
“Whatever you think it means. Look, it’s just as she said, we’re having a good time and-”
“And that’s why you needed town as soon as possible so you can leave Harper alone.”
My eyes narrowed with a smirk. “What makes you think I’ll leave the fun behind?”
“You can always have fun wherever you go in this world. You’re Maddox Aldridge, you’ll find it.”
“Well, there’s no fun like Harper. I’m talking from personal experiences, which you can’t rte to. If only you could see the way she fucks me and-”

He cut me off mid–sentence when he grabbed me by the cor, his forehead vein popping out.

I raised my eyebrows in amusement as I looked at his hands on me then back at his face. “Whoa, seems like someone’s forgotten where they are. And aren’t you getting a little too pissed about this?”
He immediately let go, smoothing his sleeves while breathing hard. Seeing him so rattled up was amusing.
“All that just because you don’t want to see me break your best friend’s heart in case she falls for me? I told you before that I’m not dumb.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. You…”
He trailed off when his phone rang, breaking the tense moment between us.
He picked up and I could already tell that it was Tiffany. He might have lowered his voice to make it sound softer, but his hand was so tight around his phone that his knuckles turned white.
Without saying a word or looking back at me, he made his way back inside. I wanted to see how pissed he was onest time.
Smoothing my cor, I chuckled lightly because he wasn’t fooling me.
The ride was quiet at first. Kate was in the passenger seat with her legs crossed while scrolling through her phone.
My eyes were fixed on the road when she finally began to speak, her tone already bitter.
“I still can’t believe Harper fucking flipped it. How does someone go from being aplete loser to this? She literally tagged people and dropped her routine fast before anyone asked. And thements are treating her like she’s a goddess or something. Poor Tiffany.”
I turned at the corner without a word.
“Seriously?” She let out an annoyed breath as she leaned towards me. “Aren’t you going to say anything?”
She leaned back in her seat and my silence must have gotten to her, because she finally stopped talking about it and stared out the window. Only a few minutester, she shifted in her seat with a heavy sigh.
“You’re still mad at me right? Look, about what happened in your room. I just wanted you so badly that I said all those things. I didn’t mean any of it. We’re cool, right?”
“Yup,” I said tly.
She was quiet for a moment, then pulled her short dress higher up her thighs. It was obviously intentional. I caught it in my peripheral, nced only once then looked away to keep my eyes on the road again.
She still wanted me to fuck her. This was all part of their n and Grayson was in on it, but my mind was far
from sex.

I couldn’t stop thinking about how Tiffany and Kate interrupted my father and I right when he was about to tell me why he had insisted that Ie over. He said we’d talk about itter but the look in his eyes made me want to call him right away so he could tell me over the phone even though I knew that wouldn’t happen. I had never seen him so serious.
When I pulled over at a gas station and stepped out of the car. I told Kate to wait, but she still decided to follow me inside the store.
As I picked up some snacks, she was all smiles while swinging her hips like we were on a date. She had her hand wrapped around my arm and giggled just so the others in the store could see.
She only let go when I was paying for everything.
When we continued the ride to her ce, she kept ncing at me with a smirk like it was a build–up to something.
We finally made it to her ce and I found two cars parked in the front yard, only making it more obvious that Tiffany and Grayson had made sure to make it seem like Kate was unable toe to the estate in her
own car.
I didn’t even point it out. I was already dealing with her in my own way.
I stepped out from the driver’s seat and opened the car door on her side without saying a word.
She took her time when getting out, brushing against me on purpose when her heels were on the ground.
I was about to walk around the car so I could leave when she held onto my wrist. Her touch was soft and I didn’t stop her.
“Maddox…” her voice was low and sultry. “You don’t have to drive back to your ce just yet. It’s only 6 PM. How about youe in and I’ll make it worth your while?”
She slid her hand up my chest and I looked down at her lips while she wrapped her arms around my neck. Even when she pushed her heels off the ground to kiss me, I once again didn’t stop her. She finally ced her lips on mine but I didn’t respond right away. I had done this so many times before and was never one to turn down ady who was in need of me, especially someone so attractive.
The situation was different from earlier in my old room, yet I still didn’t feel like touching her or kissing her back.
I gently pulled her hands off me after pulling away from her lips and she pouted.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“Some other time,”
She chuckled. “I’m not letting you leave until you give me what I want and I know you want it too.”
She attempted to kiss me again but I looked to the side.
“I said some other time.” I was a little surprised by the annoyance in my tone.

She sighed in defeat, taking a few steps back with crossed arms. “Whatever.”
I turned her down because I was too bothered by what my father had to tell me.

Whatever the case, I owed Kate no exnation, so I got back in the car but she just stood there like she was waiting for something.
Right when I started the engine and fastened my seatbelt, she lightly knocked on the window in the backseat.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“I want to get my snacks in the backseat before you go.”
Before pulling out of her driveway and quickly driving off, I said, “I never said those snacks were for you.”
