Connor rushed Xylia to the hospital.

After he examined her leg, the doctor’s face turned serious. “You’ve got an old injury that’s been aggravated by a new one. You need to stay in the hospital for observation.
“If we don’t fix it properly this time, you could end up with permanent damage.”
It hit Connor only now, after hearing the doctor, just how much he’d hurt Xylia with what he’d done.
There was a chill of regret in his eyes as he looked at Xylia, his voice unconsciously softening. I’m sorry, Xylia. This is all my fault.
“I’ll get you the best medical team, and I’ll take responsibility for everything. Even if you never fully recover, I’ll take care of you for the rest of your life.”
Xylia looked at Connor.
Under the pale hospital lights, his face was still as handsome as ever with sharp brows and a defined nose. When he looked at her, his eyes carried a caring look.
Just like they first got married when he treated her with such tenderness.
But Xylia had already ripped off his mask. She wasn’t going to expect anything from him ever again.
“Like I’d ever need him to take care of me for the rest of my life,‘ she wondered.
Her voice was cool and distant. “You can go now,”
Connor frowned. “It’s hard for you to move around. Let me stay and look after you.”
“You hurt my leg for Tessa. Aren’t you worried about her? How can you rx if you don’t go check on her?” Xylia stared at him, her face nk, her eyespletely emotionless.
Connor opened his mouth, but couldn’te up with a </beback.
Tessa had just gotten hurt that morning. Ruby was the petty type. Even though Ruby and Sadie had already let off steam, he didn’t know if she’d end up taking it out on Tessa.
“Anyway, I have already gotten Xylia to the hospital, so it’d be fine to just go check on Tessa for a bit, he wondered. Connor nced at Xylia, a conflicted look shing in his eyes.
“Since you care so much about Tessa, I’ll go check on her. You get some rest. I’ll be right back.” With that, Connor didn’t wait for a reply and left.
Connor walked out in a sh, barely taking a moment before he was gone.
Xylia couldn’t help but let out a bitter chuckle. ‘Of course, when it’s someone you actually care about, you can’t wait to run to them, she wondered.

Her leg was still aching, but she didn’t bother thinking about anything else. Shey down and drifted off to sleep.
Connor didn’t show up the whole night, not that Xylia was surprised.
Early the next morning. Sonny showed up at her hospital room door, looking sullen and clearly not happy to be there. The butler had brought him over and also passed on Orion’s greetings.
Sonny hadn’t wanted toe at all. Connor had practically forced him here.
“She’s your mom, and she’s sick. You need to go take care of her, Connor insisted.
But isn’t Dad nning to divorce Mom? Sonny wondered.
Sonny hated being pushed into things, but as soon as he walked in and saw how pale Xylia looked and her leg all wrapped up, he couldn’t help but feel bad for her.
“Mom?” He walked up to the bed, his voice barely above a whisper.
Xylia was genuinely surprised when Sonny suddenly called her Mom.
“Mom, does it still hurt? Sonny asked, his face showing a hint of worry.
Xylia looked at him, and seeing the concern on his face, she felt her heart melt a little.
Whatever happened, the years she’d spent as Sonny’s mom were real, and so was their bond.
Xylia shook her head. “It doesn’t hurt.”
“Dad went to work, so he told me to look after you. If you want some water, I’ll get it for you, Sonny said.
Xylia really didn’t want to hear anything more about Connor. She looked at Sonny, her cold expression slowly softening. “Sonny, why do you like Tessa so much?” she asked.
“Because Tessa is amazing. She’s not like you, just staying at home and taking it easy. She’s educated, she can dance, and she’s even better at drawing than you. If she were my mom, I’d have something to brag about,” Sonny said.
Ever since Sonny started speaking his mind, he was even more open about how much he liked Tessa in front of Xylia
Xylia forced a smile, but inside, she felt a pang of sadness.
Sonny was her son, the boy she’d raised herself from day one.
The same little kid who used to be all soft and clingy, always wanting her attention, now acted like he couldn’t
stand her.
“Don’t worry. Tessa will end up being your mom sooner orter,” Xylia murmured, her facepletely expressionless.

Sonny stared at Xylia, and suddenly, a wave of panic hit him. It felt like something important was slipping away, and he couldn’t do anything about it.
Last night, Ruby still gave Tessa a hard time. The girl who was usually tough as nails ended up crying badly.
Connor spent the whole nightforting her. The more Connor thought about it, the more he med Xylia. Why did she get involved with Sadie for no reason?‘ he grumbled to himself.
But Connor didn’t have time to deal with any of that right now; he had a big business deal to close this morning.
After getting ready, Connor headed to the High Desert Hotel, where he was supposed to meet Crawford.
Crawford had an overseas project lined up, and if Ford Group could secure the deal, everything would go well. It was a real lifesaver for thepany right now.
That was why Connor was taking this meeting so seriously.
Crawford showed up right on time. “Sorry, hope I didn’t keep you waiting,” he said.
“I just got here, too. Have a seat, Mr. Fletcher, Connor replied
Crawford, who looked to be in his fifties, shed Connor a smile, but there was nothing friendly about it. He cut right to the chase. “Mr. Ford, I know what you’re after, but I’ve already got someone else lined up for the overseas deal. Sorry.”
Connor’s heart sank, and he asked urgently, “But Mr. Fletcher, we were so close to finalizing the deal. You seemed really interested in the Ford Group before. Why the change?”
“When there’s a better offer on the table, I’m not going to pass it up. Mr. Ford, in business, it’s all about the bottom line. You should understand that, Crawford replied.
‘A better offer?‘ Connor thought. In a city as massive as Jupiton, Ford Group is the top dog. Who could. possibly outdo us?”

Connor’s eyes darkened, a dangerous glint shing in them. Was it that person again?” he wondered.
“Let me guess, Mr. Fletcher. Did the Garcia family reach out to you?” Connor asked, his tone sharp.
The Garcia family was top–tier in Jupiton, right at the top of the food chain among the city’s elite.
They kept things quiet, but their wealth was legendary. Nobody really knew what they were capable of, and that mystery was exactly what kept Connor on edge.
And for reasons Connor still couldn’t figure out, the Garcia heir had snatched up his deals right under his nose more than once over the past few years.
Connor had tried to look into the Garcia family before, but every lead hit a dead end.

Is that mysterious person pulling the strings again? Connor thought.

Crawford didn’t answer right away. He just took a sip of water, his expression calm. “Mr. Ford, I never actually promised you anything, so I wouldn’t say I’m standing you up.
“No hard feelings. I hope. Maybe we’ll get a chance to work together down the line.”
Connor’s face was nowhere near as calm as when he’d first arrived. He left the hotel with a face like thunder. And then, just as he was leaving, he ran right into Joshua.
Joshua was dressed in a dark, custom–tailored suit, his silver hair catching the sunlight and giving off a soft glow.
The air of refinement around him was unmistakable; he didn’t look anything like the ordinary guy Xylia had described.
‘Is he really something special?‘ Connor wondered. ‘Joshua Garcia? Could he be some distant rtive of the Garcia family?
Connor frowned, thinking. Even if he’s something special, at best, he’s just another spoiled trust–fund kid. from some minor family. Why else would he be interested in Xylia?
Connor shot Joshua a cold re, his mood sour and looking for him to take it out on. “High Desert Hotel is the biggest ce in Jupiton. Someone from the sticks like you has no business being here.”
