Early the next morning, Connor, still feeling sick, didn’t go to school. By the time he got up, breakfast was. already over.

When the maid offered to make him something, Connor puffed up his checks and pouted. “I’m not eating your gross food. Go get my mom to cook for me.”

He didn’t have an appetite, but the truth was, he’d been hungry all night. Right now, he wanted Xylia’s hearty porridge very much.

When the maid came looking for Xylia, she was getting ready to head out “I’m busy. I can’t cook for him right now. Just make sure he’s looked after, she said.

“But Sonny says our cooking is awful,” the maid exined.

“Then let him go hungry,” Xylia replied, her face unmoved as she slung her bag over her shoulder and walked straight downstairs.

Catching a glimpse, Sonny sat on the couch, acting all smug, waiting for Xylia toe over and beg him to

    cat

But Xylia didn’t even spare him a nce. She just walked straight toward the door. She was clearly about to head out.

Sonny started to get anxious and blurted out, “Where are you going?”

Xylia stopped in her tracks and turned to look at him. “I’m going out.”

“I told the maid to get you to cook for me. It’s not like you have anything important to do as a housewife, right? Just go make me something to eat. I want that hearty porridge you madest time,” Sonny snapped.

Sonny was throwing his weight around, and Xylia couldn’t help but frown. I have put my heart into raising Sonny all these years, so why has he ended up like this?” she wondered.

“The cook can make that soup, too. Just ask her to whip it up for you,” Xylia replied. Xylia didn’t agree. Then she turned and walked out the door.

After he was ignored, Sonny’s eyes turned red with anger, and he looked like he was about to cry.

Sonny couldn’t believe that Xylia, who had always loved him, wasn’t even willing to make him the hearty porridge he loved.

Is there really something so important she has to leave right now? he thought.

As Sonny stared at the door closing behind her, he started to feel a little panicked inside.

It really felt like his mom was drifting further and further away from him.

‘No way. That can’t be happening, Sonny thought. After all, I’m Xylia’s son. There’s no way she’d ever really

    leave me.

Just as Xylia stepped outside, her phone rang. It was Joshua. “Are you out yet?” he asked.

“Yeah. I’m out. You’re supposed to be taking me to meet your friend good at traditional medicine, right? Xylia replied.

“Yes,” Joshua murmured, his deep, velvety voiceing through the phone, oddly soothing to Xylia.

I’ve set the appointment for the afternoon. I’m making fish for lunch. Do you want toe over and have some?” His voice was teasing.

Xylia hesitated for a second, then agreed, “Sure, why not?”

The apartment wasn’t far, so Xylia got there in just half an hour.

Xylia knocked on the door and soon heard footsteps approaching from inside. The lock clicked, and Joshua’s almost otherworldly good looks came into view.

Beneath his silver hair, those seductive eyes curved slightly, his gaze deep and mesmerizing.

For a moment, Xylia found herselfpletely dazed.

Joshua replied, his tone rxed, “It’ll be ready in a minute.”

Xylia followed behind him, rolling up her sleeves as she made her way to the kitchen. “Let me help you.”

Joshua turned around, his tall frame blocking the entrance to the bar counter. Xylia had to stop short, nearly bumping into him.

He was dressed in a white loungewear set and an apron, looking every bit the ideal husband. But with that air of sophistication about him, he didn’t seem like someone who was used to working in the kitchen.

Joshua bent down a little, closing the distance between them. “Women don’t cook in my kitchen. Your job is just to eat, Joshua said.

Joshua’s tall frame loomed over Xylia, making her instinctively step back.

After hearing that, Xylia figured there was no point in arguing. “Alright then,” she said.

Xylia felt a bit embarrassed and quietly made her way over to the couch to sit down.

Seeing Joshua busy in the kitchen, Xylia couldn’t help but feel a bit sentimental.

Joshua always had that rebellious vibe about him. Back when they were living abroad, Xylia never even let him do any chores at first.

But he turned out to be a natural; whenever they were together, Xylia could just rx and never had to lift a finger.

Once they finished eating, Joshua brought Xylia along to meet his friend, who practiced traditional medicine.

They ended up at Jones Health Center, the most famous spot for traditional medicine in Jupiton, run by the Jones family heir for generations.

Xylia never would’ve guessed that Joshua’s so–called friend was actually Rachel Jones.

Rachel was still young, but she’d already mastered the family’s medical arts and was now the star doctor at Jones Health Center.

Even though Xylia had been a surgeon before, as a fellow doctor, she’d definitely heard of Rachel’s name.

Rachel usually only consulted on major cases.

But Joshua just walked Xylia straight into Rachel’s office.

Xylia leaned over and whispered to Joshua, “How do you know Rachel? Are you two really that tight?”

“My grandpa used to get treated here, so after a few visits, we got pretty familiar, Joshua replied.

Xylia nodded, but she still found it kind of odd.

Most famous traditional medicine doctors had all sorts of quirky traditions, but somehow Joshua was close enough with Rachel to just walk right in.

Joshua definitely isn’t as simple as he looks, Xylia thought to herself. Even though she was still a bit skeptical, she hesitantly held out her hand for Rachel to take a look.

After examining her hand for a moment, Rachel said, “Your injury was serious from the start. If you keep neglecting it, you’ll lose your chance to ever heal.”

Connor had been grabbing her wrist every time he got madtely, so the injury kept ring up again and again.

Upon hearing Rachel’s words, Xylia’s eyes sparkled. “Really? There’s still hope for recovery?” she blurted out, barely able to hide her excitement.

“Absolutely. Just stick to my regimen. I’ll prescribe you some medicine, and keep applying the ointment. Joshua gave youst time. Come see me for follow–ups twice a month. Don’t forget,” Rachel instructed.

    “Thank you,” Xylia said sincerely.

After Xylia left to get her medicine, it was just Rachel and Joshua left in the office.

Rachel turned to Joshua with a teasing smile. “So, Mr. Garcia, this is the woman you’ve been thinking about all these years? I have to say, you have pretty good taste.”

Joshua gave Rachel a frosty look. “Not your ce to judge my taste.”

Rachel just shrugged, dropping the subject.

Xylia was in a great mood as she headed home, but before she even stepped inside, she heard a surprised shout from inside the house.

As soon as she walked in, Xylia spotted Connor and Tessa tumbled together on the couch, looking a little too close.

Xylia was caughtpletely off guard, her face turning pale.

Connor spotted Xylia in the doorway and sprang to his feet, his eyes shing with panic. “Tessa almost tripped, so I tried to help her, but I couldn’t steady her. Don’t get the wrong idea,” he blurted out.
