Emery had just finished giving orders to the head maid when Lucille walked in. Emery leaned back in her chair, exhaling.
It had only been a few days since she stepped into this position, but she had already realized howplicated everything really was. Schedules, staff rotations, budgets, and emergencies seemed to pile one on top of another. And yet, to her own surprise, she was starting to enjoy the work. It kept her sharp, kept her moving.
“How long has it been since you became this bossy?” Lucille teased, dropping into the chair across from her.
“Almost a week?” Emery answered with a smile. “Feels like longer.”
Lucille nced at the papers stacked neatly on the desk. “I can see that.”
“Why are you here?” Emery asked, curious. “Do you need something?”
“Logan asked me to apany you,” Lucille replied. “Shadow detail. You’ve got a lunch date with your friend. I’ll be around, but not too obvious. Just enough to keep you safe.”
Emery sighed, pushing back from the desk. Since that kidnapping, the security around her has increased. Logan had been paranoid about it, but she didn’tin. She knew he was just trying to keep her safe. “I almost forgot about my meeting with Nina. Thanks for reminding me.” She stood, grabbing her coat from the stand.
Logan told her they had ess to some beautiful designers for her dress. So, she made him arrange this meeting with some of them. Obviously, Nina has toe too. Her friend had been calling her about some fitting for her grandmother’s party.
“How’s the training going?“Lucille asked. “I hear you wake up at four everyday. Isn’t that a bit too much for the baby?”
“I’m fine,” Emery said. “Doing well, actually. Dr. Morrow seemed surprised. I think he was half–expecting me to copse by now.”
Lucille chuckled. “To be fair, everyone expected you to die.”
Emery rolled her eyes. “Gee, thanks. That’sforting.”
The two women left the office together. Outside, a ck SUV waited near the steps. Logan stood beside it, speaking quietly with two guards. When he saw her, his gaze swept from her coat to the way she carried her tablet bag.
“You’re leaving?” he asked.
“Yes.” Emery nodded toward Lucille. “She’s tagging along.”
“Not tagging along,” Lucille corrected. “Shadowing. There’s a difference.”
Logan gave her a short nod, then looked back at Emery. “Call me if anything happens.”

He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Everything’s prepared, the SUV, the tail cars, extra bodyguards. You
won’t be alone out there.”
“I know,” Emery said. “I’ll be fine.”
To her surprise, Logan leaned in suddenly and kissed her. His mouth pressed firm against hers, brief but unmistakably certain. Emery froze for half a second before catching up to the moment, then quickly pulled back, her face heating.
“I’mte,” she muttered, trying to cover her reaction. She ducked into the SUV, shutting the door before he could see the flush climbing her cheeks.
Outside, Lucille smirked, shaking her head before heading toward a second car where two more guards waited. She would ride separate from Emery, keeping to the shadows just as Logan wanted.
Engines rumbled to life. The convoy rolled out through the gates, Emery’s SUV leading with the others trailing close behind. For the first time that morning, she felt her nerves kick in, not about the meeting with Nina, but about the kiss she couldn’t get out of her head.
After what felt like forever, the SUV finally stopped at the destination. Emery stepped out and looked up at the sign. An exclusive gold club. The entire front entrance gleamed with ss and polished metal, security posted at every door. Of course, Logan would pick a ce like this–private, expensive, impossible to walk into without an invitation.
Inside, a receptionist immediately recognized her name on the reservation and guided her to the reserved floor.
The moment Emery walked into the room, she immediately spotted Nina. Relief washed through her, but the relief didn’tst long. Nina wasn’t alone. James was sitting beside her, half–slouched like he owned the ce.
“Nina,” Emery said, moving forward to hug her. She gave her a quick squeeze before turning her gaze on her brother. “James. I wasn’t expecting you.”
“You don’t look too pleased to see your own brother,” James raised a brow. “It’s been weeks since west saw each other. At least give me a smile?”
Emery frowned and shook her head. “It’s only been a few days.”
He didn’t argue. Instead, his eyes flicked behind her, scanning the entrance. “Surprised you came alone. I thought Logan would be with you.”
Emery arched a brow. “So what, you came here hoping to talk to him?”
“Of course not,” James shot back. “I came for my sister.”
“What about thepany?” she asked. James rarely missed work. And yet he actually came here for dress shopping!? Isn’t that a bit suspicious?
“Dad will take care of it,” he said.

Emery rolled her eyes in response. She wasn’t in the mood to spar with him, not today. Slipping her arm through Nina’s, she tugged her toward the front row of seats. “Come on, I’m excited for this. Let’s not waste time.”
Nina grinned and followed, clearly entertained. James trailed after them, muttering under his breath but making no move to leave.
Minutester, an attendant arrived and escorted them to a private suite. The room was wide, lined with mirrored walls and plush seating. As soon as the three of them sat down, the overhead lights dimmed.
Without warning, music started. Spotlights red to life, casting a sharp glow on the stage. Models appeared one by one, gliding down the tform in elegant dresses. Silk, sequins, velvet, the kind of pieces Emery had only ever seen in magazines. It wasn’t just a fitting. Logan had arranged an entire runway show just for her.
Nina giggled, leaning close. “I didn’t know your husband could be this thoughtful. A whole runway show, just for you!”
James snorted, folding his arms. “Shut up. Anyone with money can rent a room and pay for a show. This is nothing special!”
