I’ve just turned to tell Shane we need to get a list of everyone that interacted with the guardsst night when I get a mind link from the gate guard.
‘Alpha, the council is here.‘
Of course they are.
Enya
I knew the minute she entered the room that something was wrong with Judith.
“Is this because I fell asleepst night?” she asks me, but her words were slurred. “I was going to tell Alpha, but I’m just so tired. I feel awful.”
“Sit down, Judith.” I don’t have to be a doctor to know that her pupils shouldn’t be that big. I put my hand on her forehead. It is cooler than it should be. “Are you cold?”
“I’m freezing. What’s wrong with me, Alpha Enya?” she asks.
“We’re going to find out.”
I contact Alpha Christina and ask her toe see Judith and bring her a nket. As soon as she sees Judith she feels the same way I do.
‘Alpha, Gabriel is asking if he can leave the conference room,‘ one of the warriors I set to watch him says in the mind link.
‘No. He stays until Christian can speak with him.‘

‘He’s not happy about it,‘ he says.
‘His other choice is the cells,‘ I growl back. If Judith is drugged, he’s part of the group that killed Nancy, so he can damn well rot for all I care!
When Beta Braden arrives, he takes one look at Judith and growls softly. “I have a nurseing to check you, Judith.”
Once Braden is there, Alpha Christina goes to prepare for the Council. I step aside while Braden talks to Judith and let Christina know about Gabriel.
“I’ll be happy to show him to the cells if need be,” she says with the same smile she had when we interviewed Dorian. Alpha Christina can be a little scary.
When I walk back over to Judith, she looks up at me. “I feel like I’m missing something. Did something happen?”
I crouch down in front of her. “Nancy’s dead.”
I watch her blink, then frown. “Nurse Nancy? The one in the cells? When? How?”
“Last night. And that’s what we’re trying to find out,” I say, just as Nurse Linda walks in.
“Wait? She died on my shift? Oh, goddess,” she says, putting her head in her hands and beginning to cry.
“Judith, listen to me. Something is wrong with you. We’re going to find out what it is, okay. Once we know, we’ll go from there,” I say softly.
She looks up at me. “But she died on my shift. Where was Gabe?”

“That’s a
a very good question. One I don’t have an answer to yet,” I tell her.
Linda draws her blood and takes it aside to test it. Braden follows her, watching everything she’s doing. I’m assuming Christian told him to keep an eye on her.
I hear her suck in air and turn to look at Judith.
“When did you start feeling bad?” Linda asks her.
“Umm, sometime after dinner, I guess.”
“What were you drinking?” she asks her.
“An energy drink. One of the ones from the kitchen. I was on patrol yesterday, so I was a bit tiredst night.”
Linda looks at Braden and I watch both their eyes go unfocused. His lips press together, and he nods before turning to me.
‘It’s wolfsbane. She’s lucky she’s not dead too. I need to see if I can find the can she was drinking out of,‘ he says.
