Chapter 27
Sophie froze for a moment, clearly not understanding all of what Jessica had just said.
“I just wanted these people to acknowledge Michael as my brother–inw. I didn’t do anything that would harm thepany’s image!”
“As the CEO, if I had an affair while married, my personal reputation alone would cause many business opportunities to slip away from us. Sophie, what happens between me and Chris is not for you to meddle in. If it weren’t for Chris today, I would have to bear the shame of having an affair during my marriage. Tomorrow, thepany’s shareholders could demand my resignation. Do you want to destroy the Wilder family with your actions?”
A string of questions came pouring out, and Sophie was stunned, unable to cover her face anymore. Instead, she looked at Chris in silence.
“But… but you two are already divorced. As long as you admit that you’re divorced, you and Michael could be together!” she said.
“That’s my business.”
Jessica was never a woman who could be easily manipted, nor was she foolish. Thinking it over carefully, she realized who was truly behind all of this.
“Michael, I know the Hall family is pressuring you. After your divorce and bringing Jordan back, the Hall family has never acknowledged you. I’ll find a way to handle it. Sophie’s suggestion isn’t suitable for you. You shouldn’t be without a career.”
Chris felt a pang in his heart when he heard this.
If Michael wasn’t supposed to be a man without a career, was he supposed to be? Was he supposed to just stay at home, do nothing, and be a useless man? If he hadn’t mentioned working at the hospital in front of the media today, perhaps tomorrow he would have been confined in the house again.
“Jessica, I don’t want to make things difficult for you and Sophie. I’ll handle things with the Hall family. Jordan caused you trouble today, and I’ll have her apologize to you,” said Michael as he got up to bring the child over.
But Jessica waved her hand. “It’s fine, you can go. There’s still a lot to handle.”
Sophie didn’t want to leave. Michael whispered a few words in her ear and pulled the teary–eyed Sophie away.
“Today…” Jessica lowered her head, her hands pressing on her temples. “You don’t need to resign from the hospital for now, but you’d better bnce your work and family. If one day Ie home and don’t see you, I will immediately have someone fire you.”
Chris straightened up.
Finally, some peace and quiet. He could have a proper conversation with Jessica.
“First, we’re divorced. I’m an independent adult. We have no rtionship anymore, so it’s not up to you to fire me. Second, that’s your home. I’m noting back. If you need me to y along at thepany, contact me. Otherwise, there’s no need for us to meet.”
Jessica lifted her head and stared at Chris.
“I didn’t think you were this kind of person.”
“Really? Maybe I loved you so much that I didn’t want you to see this side of me.”
When the word “love” was mentioned, Jessica’s previously tense body rxed a little. She sighed. “I know you love me. Can’t we just live a good life together?”
“What about today? Are we just going to let it go?”
Jessica thought for a moment. “I’ve already found a school for Sophie abroad. She should start learning to do something for

herself, It’s my fault and my mom’s fault for spoiling her so much.
“Jessica, stop pretending. I don’t believe you didn’t notice Michael’s role in all of this. Or are you just unwilling to ept such a fact?”
Jessica wasn’t a fool.
