Old Mr. He frowned slightly. “I’m not entirely sure about the details. The incident started with Scarlett Adler’s
parents. They had just returned from a trip, and I went to y chess with Old Adler. He mentioned that they
decided to stay home from then on to be with Scarlett. At that time, you were ying with Scarlett. Then,
somehow, Scarlett ran back home alone. She ended up witnessing her parents‘ death, and the house caught
fire. Neighbors told Scarlett that you saved her, but a cab fell on you as you were escaping. They
managed to rescue both of you; otherwise, you would have perished in the mes too. You were both taken
to the hospital, and when you woke up, you couldn’t remember anything…”
“And what about Scarlett?” Hugo Hodges asked.
“She didn’t lose her memory, but since then, she hasn’t spoken a word…” Old Mr. He sighed helplessly. It all
seemed like it happened just yesterday, every detail still vivid in his mind.
Hugo listened, his brow furrowed deeply.
He had no recollection of these events, as if he were hearing someone else’s story. But thinking about how
young Scarlett was when she witnessed her parents‘ death, she must have felt utterly hopeless…
A wave ofpassion surged within him, and Hugo felt more determined than ever to protect this woman
for the rest of his life!
“After you got injured and lost your memory, I brought you back to Port City for treatment,” Mr. Huxley said
with a sigh. “Old Mr. Adler lost both his son and daughter–inw suddenly. Even Scarlett didn’t speak for an
entire year after that incident. It was such a huge blow to him. Thankfully, Scarlett eventually started talking
again. Otherwise, Old Mr. Adler… well… it’s hard to imagine.”
Mr. Huxley’s voice was filled with helplessness. Having experienced the pain of losing a child himself, he
could deeply empathize with Old Mr. Adler.

There’s nothing more painful than losing a child in one’s old age. As Mr. Huxley recounted these memories,
he seemed to be enveloped in a deep sadness.
Hugo Hodges, on the other hand, frowned, his gaze dark and intense. “Who did this? Why would the culprit
do such a thing?”
Mr. Huxley shook his head. “Who knows? The police questioned everyone around and checked the
surveince footage, but back then, technology wasn’t as advanced as it is now. There weren’t cameras
everywhere. They checked everything they could, but they couldn’t even find a suspect. After months of
investigation, the case went cold and became one of the unsolved mysteries of that year.”
Hugo listened, his lips pressed into a thin line, his brows furrowed, as if deep in thought.
Mr. Huxley looked at him and said, “Don’t bring this up with them. There’s no need to reopen old wounds.”
“Don’t worry,
I’ve got it under control!” Hugo Hodges assured, then quickly asked, “So did Grandpa Adler just
give up on the investigation?”
“What else could he do? Right now, his biggest concern is Scarlett. He’s terrified something might happen to
her too. She’s his only reason to keep going,” Old Mr. Hodges exined. “Weighing the pros and cons, what
do you think he’d choose? How many parents wouldn’t want to see their child’s killer brought to justice? But
he’s just scared and helpless…”
Even though William Adler hadn’t said these words, Old Hodges knew him well enough to understand his
thoughts.
At that moment, Hugo understood why William Adler had such a strong prejudice against him.
If he were in the same position, he might feel the same way, or even worse!
As he pondered, Hugo suddenly remembered something. “By the way, Grandpa, what do Scarlett’s parents

Old Mr. Hodges furrowed his brows, a bit confused. “I’m not really sure. Her father seems to work with
so I rarely see them and don’t really inquire about their family matters.”
“Computers?” Hugo Hodges’s eyes flickered with a hint of doubt.
“Yeah, back then, not many people worked withputers, so it stood out in my memory!”
“Do you know anything about that?”
The old man, Mr. He, shook his head and then looked at him. “Why do you keep asking about this?”
Hugo lowered his gaze. “No reason, just curious.”
At that moment, Mr. He looked at him and said, “Aren’t you curious why Scarlett started speaking again
”
Seeing the old man’s teasing look, Hugo asked, “Does it have something to do with me?”
Mr. He nodded. “Scarlett was traumatized and didn’t speak for a whole year. Old Adler had no choice but to
bring her to Port City for examination and treatment. But after checking everything, the doctors were
stumped. It was only when I brought you to visit her that she spoke after seeing you…”
“What did she say?”
“She just called you, ‘Brother Hugo…”
For some reason, Hugo felt a jolt in his heart.
“But after that, you didn’t seem to like hanging around Scarlett as much. It was as if you didn’t know her.

Later on, Old Adler took Scarlett away.”

Back in the countryside, it wasn’t until you reached the age for marriage that I arranged things for you. That’s
why I insisted on you getting married. Whether you want to marry her or not, it’s still you. You may not care,
but I have my reputation to uphold!” The conversation circled back to this topic. “In the end, it seems I’m the
one to me for this.”
“You never told me any of this!” Hugo Hodges eximed.
“What difference would it make if I did?” Old Mr. Adler asked. “You might have thought I was making things
up just to get you two together. Besides, this involves the Adler Family’s painful past. It’s not something I can
bring up every day,” he exined.
Hugo closed his eyes briefly, admitting to himself that he might have thought that way if he’d known back
then.
But Hugo was more curious about one thing, “Did Scarlett want to marry me back then?”
“What, you think Old Adler forced Scarlett to marry you? If it weren’t for the fact that you once saved
Scarlett’s life and considering my influence, you wouldn’t have had a chance to marry his granddaughter,” Old
Mr. Adler replied.
Hugo didn’t remember any of this.
But Scarlett Adler surely did.
So, when she married him, it wasn’t because she was forced, but because she wanted to?
She had never mentioned this before.
But why would she want to?

Was it because he had saved her and she felt grateful, or was there another reason…?
Hugo Hodges‘ eyes were dark and heavy with unspoken thoughts.
