In the car parked outside the hospital, Alex and Tara opened theirptop, keeping an eye on the surveince feed from

    outside Scarlett’s hospital room.

Tara couldn’t help but yawn. “With Hugo watching over things, your mom should be safe,” she said, turning to Alex. “Why

don’t I take you home to rest? You’re still growing, and staying up all night isn’t good for

    you.”

Alex shook his head, his eyes fixed on the screen, a serious expression on his face. “No need. I have a bad feeling

tonight… like that person might show up.” He nced at Tara. “If I get tired, I’ll just nap in the car.”

“Tonight, you think?” Tara raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure?”

“I can’t exin it, just a nervous feeling, a hunch,” Alex replied.

Tara narrowed her eyes, then nodded. “Alright, let’s keep watch then. I want to see which scoundrel has been making us

waste all these days. When we catch him, I’ll make sure he regrets it!”

Hearing her words, Alex nced sideways at her.

“What are you looking at?” Tara asked. “Is there something on my face?” She checked her reflection in the mirror.

Looking around, Tara said, “There’s nothing here, it’s really nice!”

    First shook his head.

“Then what are you looking at?”

    “Nothing, just worried about you.”

Tara was puzzled. “Worried? Worried about what?”

“Worried that whoever marries you might end up getting beaten to death!”

    Tara was speechless.

“Me? What do I have to worry about?”

Tara narrowed her eyes and leaned closer, her lips curving into a yful smile. “Do you have a little crush on me? Is that

why you’re thinking like that? It’s okay, I’m not that much older than you. I can wait for you to grow up. Then when you

marry me, you’ll find out if you’ll get beaten up!”

First immediately put on a ttering smile. “I overstepped!”

“Don’t worry about it. It’s settled then. I was worried that I’m so amazing, no man in the world could match me…” She

looked him over. “But I think you might just do.”

    First was speechless.

“From now on, no looking at other girls, okay? And no dating early. I’ll be keeping an eye on you.”

First now understood what it meant to dig your own grave.

    The night was deepening.

Hugo walked into the hospital room from outside and looked at Scarlett. “Grandpa and the others took Fourth and Second

out for the day. They went straight home and mighte by tomorrow morning.”

    Scarlett nodded indifferently. “Got it.”

As she got out of bed and headed for the door, Hugo frowned. “Where are you going?”

“Bored. Just going for a walk,” Scarlett replied without looking back.

Seeing this, Hugo didn’t say anything but followed her.

Noticing he was following, Scarlett nced back at him. “Hugo, I’m a person, not a prisoner.”

“Do you think prisoners get this kind of treatment?” Hugo countered.

Scarlett furrowed her brow, too tired to argue, and continued walking out.

Hugo stayed silent, trailing behind her.

The hospital at night was quiet and sparsely popted, especially in the VIP area.

Downstairs, several patients were moving around, getting some exercise.

Doctors and nurses were busy with their tasks.

Scarlett stood at the top of the stairs, gazing thoughtfully at the bright moon hanging in the sky.

Hugo watched her, then nced up at the moon as well.

He couldn’t shake the feeling that Scarlett was different tonight, like she had something on her mind.

    “Hugo,” she called softly.

Hearing his name, Hugo shifted his gaze back to her, his voice rough. “What’s up?”

“If I can’t get through this…” Scarlett hesitated, unsure if she had the right to entrust her grandfather to Hugo. After all,

they weren’t anything to each other.

After a moment of thought, she continued, “Please, make sure to visit my grandpa with Mr. He more often. Take care of

his health. He’s only been hard on you because of me. He used to really admire and like you.” Scarlett’s voice was calm.

Hugo felt a strange pang in his heart, his brows furrowing. Her words sounded like a farewell.

After a long pause, Hugo spoke, “You’ll be fine!”

Scarlett smiled slightly, her eyes meeting his. “I hope you won’t hold a grudge against my grandpa because of me.”

“No matter how he treats me, he’ll always be the Grandpa Adler who loved me dearly when I was a kid,” Hugo said.

Hearing this, Scarlett nodded in relief.

“Do you know something?” Hugo squinted, looking at her intently.

“Isn’t it because I know nothing that I feel this way?” Scarlett countered.

Ever since she realized something was wrong with the car, a sense of unease had settled in her heart.

She feared ending up like her parents, who passed away suddenly….

    She feared unexpected idents….

It wasn’t death she feared; it was the thought of those left behind not being able to cope.

The kids would be taken care of, the Hodges family wouldn’t turn a blind eye.

    But Grandpa…

She feared… she feared Grandpa would cry holding her lifeless body…

Scarlett’s eyes started to well up. To hide it from Hugo, she turned her gaze away. But in the next moment, Hugo stepped

forward, standing right in front of her.

“Scarlett, listen to me. I will never let anything happen to you. Never,” Hugo said, looking at her with determination.

Scarlett looked at him and smiled slightly, “Hugo, there are a lot of people here. Do you want me to scream for help?”

Hugo was taken aback by her smile; it was the first time she had smiled at him.

For a moment, Hugo was a bit dazed.

    “Go ahead,” Hugo replied.

Scarlett knew that this tactic wouldn’t work on Hugo.

After a brief pause, she suddenly spoke, “Hugo, can you do me a favor?”

    “Sure, what is it?”

“I want something sweet,” Scarlett said. “There’s a dessert shop near the hospital. Could you get me something from

    there?”

Since Scarlett had asked, Hugo couldn’t refuse. “What vor do you like?”

    “Sweet, really sweet,” Scarlett replied.

    Hugo nodded, “Alright, no problem.”

“I’ll wait for you here,” Scarlett said.

As he looked at her small face, with skin as smooth as porcin, resembling a young woman in her early twenties, Hugo

found it hard to tear his gaze away.

It took him a while to snap back to reality. “Wait for me,” he said, getting up to leave.

But after a few steps, he turned back.

    “What’s up?” Scarlett asked.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be right here waiting!” Scarlett assured him.

Despite his concern, seeing so many people around made Hugo hesitate only briefly before he walked away.

Scarlett watched Hugo’s figure disappear into the distance, her smile gradually fading, her gaze growing more profound.

Once he was out of sight, she turned and headed back toward the hospital room, her expression now serious.
