Chapter 45 Don’t be subservient.
The conversation eventually circled back to this topic.
It was clear that Hugo Hodges was still hung up on the matter.
Scarlett Adler paused, then looked at him and asked, “What about you?”
“I never considered giving up those two kids!” Hugo Hodges said solemnly, emphasizing each word.
“I’m talking about what you did to me,” Scarlett Adler rified.
Hugo Hodges hesitated for a moment. “Those are two different things.”
“No, they’re not!” Scarlett Adler retorted. “If you hadn’t treated me the way you did back then, I wouldn’t have
kept it a secret from you.”
Hugo Hodges’ lips tightened into a thin line, and he remained silent.
“You may not have wanted to give up the two kids, but would you have allowed them to stay with me? Would
you have allowed them to have a mother like me, someone you find so distasteful? You wouldn’t,” Scarlett
Adler stated confidently. “So, even if what I did was selfishly for my own sake, what’s wrong with that? Why
should I have kept your, Hugo Hodges’, flesh and blood, only to suffer the pain of separation and longing?”
Hugo Hodges remained silent.
Scarlett Adler continued, “So, don’t just me me. I admit my actions were selfish, but it was the best
oue for both of us. No ties, no entanglements, and no need for us to be unforgettable figures in
each other’s lives.”
“I wouldn’t mind if they still existed,” Hugo Hodges said.
Scarlett Adler looked at him, paused for a moment, and then replied, “I would mind.”
Hugo Hodges looked at her with questioning eyes.

“In this matter, I don’t have the upper hand, so Hugo Hodges, I won’t allow myself to suffer. If I had a choice,
I’d rather you be the one suffering,” Scarlett Adler said bluntly and directly.
Call her selfish or heartless, that’s just who she was.
In rtionships, she didn’t regret what she had given, but the moment she decided to let go, she didn’t want
to be the one being humble.

After Scarlett Adler finished speaking, Hugo Hodges hit the brakes.
Scarlett Adler looked out the window and saw that they had arrived at her apartment building.
Scarlett Adlerposed herself and looked at him. “I’ve made myself very clear, and I believe you
understand. Also, thank you for yesterday and for driving me back today.” With that, Scarlett Adler opened the

However, as soon as she stepped out, Hugo Hodges also got out of the car.
“Scarlett Adler,” Hugo Hodges said suddenly, “If I had a choice, I’d rather we be unforgettable figures in each
other’s lives than this.”
Scarlett Adler looked at him and smiled faintly, “Toote.”
Just as Hugo Hodges was about to say something, a car pulled up beside them.
William Adler got out of the car, looked at them, and finally fixed a questioning gaze on Hugo Hodges, “What
are you doing here?”
Seeing William Adler, Hugo Hodgesposed himself and greeted him politely, “Grandpa Adler.”
William Adler’s eyes lingered, and his gaze fell on Scarlett Adler’s bandaged hand. His brows furrowed
instantly, “Girl, you’re hurt? What happened?”
“Grandpa, I’m fine,” Scarlett Adler said.
The bandage on her hand was stained with blood, making it look serious.
William Adler turned his gaze to Hugo Hodges, “You brat, was it you? What did you do to Scarlett?”
“Whatever you’ve done, let me tell you, I don’t care whose grandson you are. If you dare toy a hand on
Scarlett, I’ll fight you to the death!”
Seeing William Adler’s anger re up, Scarlett quickly stepped forward to stop him. “Grandpa, it has nothing
to do with him. It wasn’t him.”
“If it wasn’t him, then who else could it be?” William Adler red at Hugo Hodges, fuming.
Hugo, on the other hand, stood there without speaking or exining. He wasn’t afraid, but rather out of
respect for William Adler.

“Grandpa, it really wasn’t him. Some ident happened yesterday, and he saved me,” Scarlett exined
quickly. If she didn’t make it clear, she was afraid William Adler might actually resort to violence.
Hearing this, William Adler turned to Scarlett. “Scarlett, don’t be afraid. With Grandpa here, no one can bully
you.”
“Really, Grandpa, I have no reason to protect him,” Scarlett said.
“Really?”
Scarlett nodded repeatedly to confirm.
William Adler’s anger gradually subsided as he looked at Hugo. “Since Scarlett says so, I believe you. But
Hugo Hodges…”
William Adler thought for a moment and said, “Scarlett is the only family I have left, and I don’t want her to be
harmed in any way. I hope you understand that.”
Hugo Hodges nodded. “I understand.”
“Good that you do.” Saying this, William Adler looked at Scarlett Adler. “Alright, let’s go upstairs quickly so I
can see what happened.”
“It’s just a minor injury, and I did it myself,” she said. With William Adler looking anxious, the two went
upstairs together.
Hugo Hodges stood downstairs, watching them go inside before he finally looked away, got into his car, and
drove off.
Upstairs.
William Adler stood beside her with the first aid kit, carefully examining the wound.
“The wound must be deep. No, we should still go to the hospital to get it treated,” William Adler said.
“Grandpa, this has already been treated at the hospital. Medicine has been applied. It’s really nothing,”
Scarlett Adler said.
Hearing this, William Adler breathed a sigh of relief but still didn’t give up asking, “What exactly happened?”
“Um… it’s a long story, but Grandpa, please don’t worry. I’ll handle it,” she said.
“No, I have to exin everything clearly.”
Scarlett knew that if she didn’t, she wouldn’t get through this.
After thinking for a moment, Scarlett said, “Yesterday, I went to discuss a project with Kane Jennings from
Keyue. He’s a troublemaker… so I hurt myself to stay alert. But then Hugo Hodges came to rescue me and
beat him up. After that, he took me to the hospital, and that’s how you see me now.” She described the
process lightly.
William Adler listened, and even though Scarlett made it sound simple, he knew the reality was far from it.
However, hearing that Hugo had saved her and beaten the guy up, William felt a bit relieved. His prejudice
against Hugo lessened slightly.
Suddenly, he remembered something and immediately turned on the TV. The news was reporting:
“This morning at 9:00 AM, the Industry and Commerce Bureau and the Serious Crimes Unit went to Keyue
Company and arrested a senior executive, Mr. Kane, on the spot. ording to sources, Mr. Kane is used
of multiple crimes, includingmercial offenses and assault. Solid evidence has been secured…”
Watching the news footage of Kane Jennings’ arrest, William Adler turned to Scarlett Adler.
“Did you do this?” William asked.
Scarlett immediately shook her head. “It wasn’t me. I haven’t even had the time yet.”
William believed her. If she had done it, she wouldn’t deny it.
“Then how could it be such a coincidence?” William wondered.
